Chapter 12: The Child Nobody Knew Existed

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

“You had another child?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer was simple.

But nothing about it was.

Marcus took a step back.

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“How is that possible?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I gave the baby up.””

The words shocked everyone.

Even her.

Because saying them aloud made them real.

Marcus stared.

“You had a child and never told anyone?””

“I was young.””

“You keep saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“But I was a child too.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your entire family has been keeping pieces of your own life from you.””

Evelyn looked away.

Because she couldn’t argue.

I watched her carefully.

For the first time, I saw not just the woman who hurt me.

I saw someone carrying decades of choices she never wanted to face.

But that didn’t erase what she did.

Marcus looked at his father.

“Did you know?””

His father shook his head.

“No.””

“Mom?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I didn’t tell anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I buried that part of my life.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Apparently you didn’t.””

She looked at the envelope.

“No.””

The word was barely audible.

“I didn’t.””

Marcus opened the folder again.

“What does this have to do with my baby?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she answered:

“Because the person who contacted the medical center wasn’t trying to test your baby.””

She looked at me.

“They were trying to find out if your baby was connected to my first child.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Connected how?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Her father’s folder suddenly seemed much heavier.

Marcus looked between them.

“Are you saying my child might be related to someone we don’t know?””

“No,” Evelyn said quickly.

Then stopped.

That hesitation said more than words.

Marcus noticed.

“Mom.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

The answer terrified everyone.

Because Evelyn Carter always knew.

She always had a plan.

But now?

She was standing in the middle of her own secrets.

Lost.

A notification appeared on Marcus’s phone.

Another message.

Nobody wanted to look.

But everyone did.

Marcus opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He turned the screen.

The message was from the same unknown number.

*“You’re asking the wrong person. Evelyn didn’t order the test because she suspected the baby. She ordered it because she already knew who the father was.””*

The air left my lungs.

Marcus stared at his mother.

“Who is my baby’s father?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

And tears finally fell down her face.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Then who does?””

Nobody answered.

Until his father slowly looked toward the entrance.

Everyone followed his eyes.

A woman was standing outside the gate.

Older.

Holding a small worn envelope.

Her eyes locked on Evelyn.

Then Marcus.

Then me.

May you like

And she whispered:

“I do.””
