Chapter 4: The Question Nobody Wanted Asked
The message on Marcus’s phone sat between us like a bomb nobody wanted to touch.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
Even the children who had been running around the garden earlier had disappeared inside with their parents. The baby shower that was supposed to celebrate a new life had become a courtroom without a judge.
Marcus kept staring at the screen.
Then he slowly looked at Evelyn.
“Who is the biological father?””
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Evelyn’s face lost all color.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He lifted a hand.
“Don’t say my name like that. Answer the question.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Not because I believed the message.
Not completely.
But because Evelyn’s reaction was louder than any confession could have been.
A woman who was innocent would have been angry.
She would have laughed.
She would have demanded to know who was sending lies about her family.
Instead, she looked terrified.
I touched Marcus’s arm.
“Maybe someone is trying to hurt us.””
He looked at me.
“Maybe.””
Then his eyes returned to his mother.
“But she knows something.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re accusing me of.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Then help me understand.””
She looked around at the guests.
At the decorations.
At the cake with my daughter’s name written in frosting.
Then she looked at me.
“Nia, you should have never brought that envelope here.””
I stared at her.
“You’re still blaming me?””
“I’m saying you created this moment.””
A bitter laugh escaped my throat.
“You smashed cake into my face in front of our entire family, Evelyn.””
Her expression hardened.
“You think this is about cake?””
“No,” I said.
“I think it’s about you finally losing control.””
That landed.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then Marcus picked up the envelope again.
“I’m opening it.””
Evelyn rushed forward.
“Wait.””
He stopped.
Not because he wanted to.
Because something in her voice made him pause.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I need to explain.””
“Finally.””
She looked down.
The confident woman who had controlled every room she entered suddenly looked like someone trapped inside one.
“There are things you don’t know about the months before this baby was conceived.””
My heart sank.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked just as confused as I felt.
“What things?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Like she was fighting herself.
“I can’t say it here.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. You don’t get to do that.””
“Do what?””
“Drop a secret in front of everyone and then ask for privacy.””
His voice cracked.
“You embarrassed my wife. You accused her of hiding something. You brought this envelope into our lives. Now you want to control when the truth comes out?””
Evelyn’s eyes softened.
“I’m your mother.””
“And she’s my wife.””
The words hit her harder than anything else.
I saw it.
The moment she realized Marcus had chosen.
Not against her.
For me.
A gust of wind moved through the backyard, knocking one of the pink ribbons loose from the gift table.
The ribbon landed beside the envelope.
A tiny detail.
But I remember it.
Because everything felt strangely quiet.
Like the world was waiting.
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you?””
She had no answer.
Again.
That silence.
That endless silence.
Marcus picked up the envelope.
His fingers moved toward the seal.
And then Evelyn said something that stopped him.
“Because if you open that, you might lose your father.””
Marcus froze.
The entire world seemed to freeze with him.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn looked like she regretted the words the second they left her mouth.
I felt cold.
Because until that moment, I thought this secret was about me.
About my baby.
About Marcus.
But now there was another person involved.
His father.
A man I had only met a handful of times.
A man who had always seemed distant but kind.
Marcus stared at his mother.
“Why would a DNA test have anything to do with Dad?””
Evelyn looked away.
“I need to talk to you privately.””
“No.””
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice grew stronger.
“You don’t get to take pieces of this truth and hand them out when it benefits you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Real tears.
Or at least they looked real.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””
The words cut deeper than he probably intended.
Evelyn looked at him.
And for the first time, I wondered if Marcus had spent his entire life believing a version of his family that wasn’t real.
The phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked down.
Another message.
Marcus opened it.
This time, he read it silently.
His face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he handed me the phone.
The message was short.
*“Ask Evelyn why she requested a second DNA test before the baby shower.””*
My hands went numb.
A second test.
I looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
And that was when I knew.
The envelope in Marcus’s hand wasn’t the beginning of the secret.
May you like
It was the end of a trail.
And someone had been following it long before today.
