Chapter 13: The Father Who Knew Too Much

Nobody looked away from Daniel.

Not even for a second.

Maya stared at him, waiting.

Waiting for anger.

Waiting for denial.

Waiting for the same explanation everyone had given her all morning.

But Daniel said nothing.

And somehow, that silence hurt more.

“Dad?””

The word came out quietly.

Daniel looked at the handwritten note from Evelyn.

His face changed.

Not like someone being accused.

Like someone remembering something he had spent years trying to forget.

Maya felt her stomach tighten.

“You knew.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

Maya laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“That’s the problem.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I never understand anything.””

She pointed around the room.

“Because everyone decides what I’m allowed to know.””

Daniel looked down.

“Maya…”

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I need you to answer one question.””

Daniel swallowed.

“What?””

“Did you know about the letter?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel.””

Maya felt like the air disappeared.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I knew your mother wrote something.””

“Something?””

Maya’s voice rose.

“You knew she left me a letter?””

“Yes.””

“And you never gave it to me?””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

The sentence again.

The same sentence everyone used.

Maya wiped her tears.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because she was right.

Lily stepped forward.

“Evelyn trusted you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I loved her.””

The words surprised everyone.

Maya stared.

“You loved my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was my best friend before she became your mother.””

Vanessa looked away.

Maya noticed.

Another hidden piece.

Daniel continued.

“After Lily disappeared, everything fell apart.””

Lily lowered her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought you were gone forever.””

A painful silence followed.

Maya looked between them.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because every time I tried…”

He stopped.

Maya waited.

“Every time I tried, Vanessa reminded me what would happen.””

Maya turned toward Vanessa.

“What did she threaten?””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“Daniel.””

“No,” Daniel said.

His voice was different now.

Tired.

Honest.

“I’m done protecting everyone except Maya.””

The words shocked her.

Daniel continued.

“She told me if the truth came out, everything would be destroyed.””

Maya stared.

“Everything?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your relationship with me. Your future. Your safety.””

Marcus frowned.

“Safety from who?””

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

The room went quiet.

Maya understood.

Ethan.

The threat was always Ethan.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

For a moment, Maya saw something she hadn’t seen in years.

Regret.

Real regret.

But regret didn’t erase eighteen years.

It didn’t bring back birthdays.

It didn’t bring back conversations.

It didn’t bring back the mother she never got to know.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“This ends today.””

Ethan smiled.

“You think exposing me changes anything?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

Ethan laughed.

“You’re still missing something.””

Maya turned.

“What?””

Ethan looked at her.

“You think I was the only person who lied.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan pointed at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Maya felt exhausted.

“What now?””

Ethan smiled.

“The truth about Lily.””

Lily stepped forward.

“There is nothing else.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You really believe that?””

The confidence in his voice made everyone uneasy.

Then Ethan pulled out his phone.

He opened a file.

And placed it on the table.

Maya looked down.

A recording.

Dated eighteen years earlier.

Her hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Ethan smiled.

“The conversation that changed everything.””

Marcus moved quickly.

“Don’t.””

But Maya reached for it.

She pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Her mother’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“If anything happens to me, Maya needs to know the truth.””

Maya stopped breathing.

Then another voice answered.

Vanessa.

“I can’t do this.””

Evelyn’s voice returned.

“You promised.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I know.””

The recording continued.

But before Maya could hear the rest…

The power suddenly went out.

The room went black.

Someone screamed.

And when the lights came back on seconds later…

May you like

The phone was gone.

And so was Ethan.
