Chapter 4: The Name She Had Never Heard

“Who is…”

Maya’s voice disappeared before she could finish.

The name printed beneath the university logo stared back at her.

A name that meant nothing to her.

A name that meant everything to Vanessa.

Marcus noticed the way Maya’s fingers stopped moving.

“You recognize it?””

Maya looked up slowly.

“No.””

Her eyes shifted toward Vanessa.

“But she does.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa’s face had lost all color.

For a woman who always seemed prepared, always seemed ten steps ahead, this was different.

She looked caught.

Daniel noticed too.

“Vanessa?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa, who is that name?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Maya felt something inside her crack.

Her father’s confusion was real.

That scared her more than anything.

Because if Daniel truly didn’t know, then someone had been keeping secrets from everyone.

Or maybe only from her.

Marcus placed the folder on the table.

“Maya, before you open anything, there is something you need to understand.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“The envelope wasn’t sent because someone wanted to hurt you.””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“You don’t know that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know exactly why it was sent.””

Maya stood.

“Then tell me.””

Marcus didn’t hesitate.

“Because you deserve to know where you came from.””

The room went silent.

Maya felt like the floor moved beneath her.

Where she came from.

The words were simple.

But they carried a weight she couldn’t explain.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus glanced at him.

“I’m saying Maya has been asking the wrong people for answers.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Maya is my daughter.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

But he didn’t look away either.

“Yes.””

A single word.

Not denial.

Not agreement.

Just yes.

Maya noticed.

“Why did you say it like that?””

Nobody answered.

She looked between them.

Her father.

Her stepmother.

A stranger holding information about her life.

“I need the truth.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But I need it from someone who isn’t afraid of it.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Maya, listen to me.””

“No.””

The response came immediately.

Vanessa stopped.

Maya shook her head.

“I listened for years.””

Her eyes burned.

“I listened when you told me I wasn’t good enough. I listened when you told me I needed to be grateful. I listened when Dad told me to be patient.””

Daniel flinched.

“But nobody listened to me.””

The room became still.

Marcus watched Maya carefully.

Not interrupting.

Letting her finally speak.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You think this man cares about you?””

Maya looked at Marcus.

Then back at Vanessa.

“At least he showed up.””

The words hit harder than a scream.

Daniel looked down.

Because he knew.

He knew she was right.

The front door opened suddenly.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Elegant.

Her hands shaking slightly.

Maya had never seen her before.

But Vanessa reacted instantly.

“No.””

The woman stepped inside.

“Yes.””

Her voice was soft.

But certain.

Marcus moved aside.

Maya stared.

“Who is she?””

The woman looked at Maya.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Your mother wanted you to have this.””

Maya froze.

Her mother.

The word felt unfamiliar.

A word from old photographs.

A word from questions nobody answered.

“My mother?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

The woman ignored her.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

Different from Marcus’s.

Older.

Worn.

“I was told to wait until your eighteenth birthday.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the envelope.

“Who are you?””

The woman swallowed.

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Like hearing that name hurt.

Maya noticed.

Again.

Another person Vanessa feared.

Claire looked at Maya.

“And I’m the person your mother trusted before she disappeared.””

Maya couldn’t breathe.

“Disappeared?””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Vanessa, what is she talking about?””

But Vanessa wasn’t looking at Daniel.

She was looking at Claire.

“You promised.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“I promised your sister.””

The room froze.

Maya’s heart stopped.

“My sister?””

May you like

And for the first time in eighteen years, Maya realized the biggest secret in her family might not be about her.

It might be about someone who had been erased.
