Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wanted Her Silent

Maya had spent years learning how to read Vanessa Carter.

She knew the little signs.

The tight smile when she was angry.

The perfectly calm voice before she said something cruel.

The way she fixed her jewelry whenever she was lying.

But she had never seen Vanessa afraid.

Not once.

The room felt smaller.

Maya held the envelope against her torn dress, feeling the sharp edge of the paper through the fabric.

“What does he mean?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“You knew this day would come.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Someone explain what’s happening.””

Maya almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was the same question she had been asking for years.

What was happening?

Why did Vanessa always treat her like a problem?

Why did Daniel always tell her to be patient?

Why did every important moment in Maya’s life somehow become a moment where she had to apologize?

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

“You should have been told earlier.””

Daniel frowned.

“Told what?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That man is trying to create drama.””

Marcus looked at the scissors still in her hand.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know this family.””

Marcus nodded.

“No. But I know what happened.””

Maya’s breathing slowed.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told her more than words could.

She looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable again.

“Vanessa, what is this?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

Maya watched her father carefully.

For years, she had convinced herself that Daniel was trapped.

That maybe he didn’t notice.

Maybe he didn’t understand.

Maybe Vanessa was just better at controlling every situation.

But now she wondered.

Had he known something?

“Dad,” Maya said softly.

“Did you know Marcus was coming?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation broke something inside her.

“You did.””

“Maya…”

“You knew.””

Daniel looked down.

“I didn’t know he would come here.””

“But you knew about him.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A small flash of anger crossed her face.

Not toward Marcus.

Toward Daniel.

“You promised me,” she said.

Daniel looked at her.

“Vanessa…”

“You promised this would stay buried.””

Maya felt cold.

Buried.

The word stayed in the air.

“What would stay buried?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa immediately turned back.

“Nothing.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

His voice was calm, but everyone stopped.

“Maya deserves the truth.””

Vanessa laughed once.

A sharp, humorless sound.

“You think you’re saving her?””

“No,” Marcus said.

“I think she has spent eighteen years being denied something that belonged to her.””

Maya’s fingers tightened around the envelope.

“What belongs to me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“The chance to make your own decision.””

The sentence confused her.

“What does that mean?””

Before Marcus could answer, Vanessa moved closer.

“Maya, listen to me.””

It was the first time she had used Maya’s name without anger.

And somehow that scared Maya more.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

Maya looked down at the envelope.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For a moment, Maya saw something behind her stepmother’s perfect appearance.

Panic.

Real panic.

Then Vanessa recovered.

“You need to trust me.””

Maya stared at her.

After the dress.

After all the years.

After this moment.

Those words felt impossible.

“Trust you?””

Her voice shook.

“You cut my graduation dress because you were scared of an envelope.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Maya, maybe we should talk privately.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Maya wiped her cheek.

“No more private conversations where everyone tells me I’m overreacting.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“No more pretending nothing happened.””

Marcus watched her quietly.

Almost proudly.

Then his phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Maya asked.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He turned the phone toward himself.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Daniel frowned.

“Who knows?””

Marcus lowered the phone.

“The person who sent this envelope.””

Maya felt her stomach drop.

“Who sent it?””

Marcus looked at the sealed envelope.

Then at Vanessa.

“The person who has been waiting eighteen years for Maya to find out the truth.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

And for the first time, Maya noticed something strange.

May you like

Her stepmother wasn’t trying to stop Marcus anymore.

She was trying to stop Maya from opening the envelope.
