Chapter 3: The Name On The Envelope
Maya didn’t remember moving.
One second she was standing in the living room.
The next, she was sitting on the edge of the sofa, staring at the envelope in her hands.
The white paper looked ordinary.
That was the cruel part.
Something that could change her entire life looked like nothing more than a piece of mail.
Outside the windows, cars arrived for the graduation ceremony.
Neighbors walked by in bright clothes.
Families took pictures.
People celebrated.
Maya sat inside a house where nobody knew what to say.
Marcus remained standing nearby.
Daniel stayed frozen near the doorway.
And Vanessa still held the scissors.
“You should put those down,” Marcus said.
Vanessa looked at the scissors.
Almost surprised she was still holding them.
Slowly, she placed them on the table.
But she never took her eyes off the envelope.
Maya noticed.
“You’re scared of paper.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I’m scared of what happens if you believe everything you read.””
Maya looked at her.
“Why?””
No answer.
Again.
Always no answer.
She was tired of unanswered questions.
“Why are you afraid of this?””
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“Maya, some things are complicated.””
“That’s what people say when they don’t want to tell the truth.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Watch your tone.””
She turned toward him.
“Why?””
He stopped.
“Why should I?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Everyone keeps telling me to be respectful. Be patient. Be quiet. But nobody tells me what I’m supposed to do when people keep hurting me.””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“She has a right to ask.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Marcus met his eyes.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
The tension between the two men was immediate.
Maya noticed.
“You know my dad?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
She looked at Daniel.
“You know him.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Maya…”
“How long?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“This is pointless.””
She reached for the envelope.
Maya pulled it away.
“Don’t.””
The single word surprised everyone.
Especially Maya.
Because she had never spoken to Vanessa like that before.
Vanessa stared at her.
For years, Maya had been the daughter who tried harder.
The daughter who apologized first.
The daughter who wanted peace.
But something inside her had finally reached its limit.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
Maya held the envelope tighter.
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
Marcus looked toward the clock.
“We don’t have much time.””
“Time for what?”” Daniel asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small folder.
Maya noticed Vanessa immediately react.
“What is that?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Something else you didn’t want Maya to see.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Vanessa?””
She looked trapped.
For the first time, Maya saw the person behind the carefully controlled image.
Not a powerful woman.
Not someone in control.
Someone who had been waiting for a moment she couldn’t prevent.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“What is in that folder?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said:
“The reason your graduation almost didn’t happen.””
Maya stopped breathing for a second.
The room became completely silent.
Her graduation.
Not just the dress.
Not just today.
The entire reason she was standing there.
Vanessa looked at the envelope.
Then at Maya.
“Maya, please.””
The word shocked her.
Please.
Vanessa had never begged her for anything.
Maya slowly turned the envelope over.
Her fingers moved toward the seal.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“If you open that, you’ll never look at this family the same way again.””
Maya froze.
Marcus watched her.
Daniel closed his eyes.
And just before Maya broke the seal, she noticed one detail printed beneath the university logo.
A name.
A name she had never seen before.
A name Vanessa clearly recognized.
May you like
Because the moment Maya read it aloud, Vanessa’s face changed completely.
“Who is…”
