Chapter 5: The Sister Nobody Mentioned
Maya couldn’t move.
The words repeated in her mind.
My sister.
She had grown up believing she was an only child.
Every birthday.
Every school form.
Every family conversation.
Only child.
That was the story.
But Vanessa’s face told her the truth had never been that simple.
“You had a sister?”” Maya asked.
Her voice sounded strange.
Like someone else was speaking.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Is this true?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
Maya felt the answer before anyone said it.
“Dad?””
Daniel’s silence was painful.
“You knew.””
He shook his head quickly.
“No.””
But Maya saw it.
The hesitation.
The confusion.
The fear.
“You knew something.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“I knew there were things Vanessa didn’t want discussed.””
Maya stared at him.
“And you accepted that?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
The sentence made her angry.
“Protecting me from what?””
Nobody answered.
Claire stepped closer.
“Your mother wanted you to grow up without carrying the weight of what happened.””
Maya looked at her.
“Then why tell me now?””
Claire glanced at Marcus.
“Because she believed eighteen was old enough.””
Maya looked down at the envelope in her hand.
The sealed university envelope suddenly felt heavier.
Everything she thought she knew about herself was changing.
“Who was my sister?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Her name was Lily.””
The name settled into the room.
Lily.
Maya repeated it silently.
A sister.
A person who had existed.
A person nobody had ever mentioned.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like years of hiding something had finally caught up with her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Maya asked.
Vanessa looked up.
Her eyes were wet.
But Maya didn’t know if she could believe those tears.
“Because you were supposed to have a normal life.””
Maya laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“A normal life?””
She pointed toward her ruined dress.
“This was your idea of normal?””
Vanessa looked away.
Maya turned to Claire.
“What happened to Lily?””
Claire’s face tightened.
“She disappeared.””
“When?””
“Before you were born.””
Maya frowned.
Before she was born.
The timeline didn’t make sense.
“My mother lost her?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“She lost everyone.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Maya, there’s more.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Stop.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You had eighteen years.””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
“I know what you did.””
Maya looked between them.
“What did she do?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That scared her.
Because Marcus had always been calm.
But now he looked angry.
Not loud.
Not emotional.
Controlled.
The kind of anger that came from knowing something unforgivable.
Maya walked closer.
“What happened to Lily?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
Then at Maya.
“Your sister was the reason your mother left.””
Maya’s heart raced.
“Why?””
Claire opened her mouth.
Before she could speak, Vanessa interrupted.
“Because she was sick.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa continued.
“She wasn’t thinking clearly.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Enough.””
“No.””
Claire stepped closer.
“You lied long enough.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you both talking about?””
Claire looked at him.
“You really don’t know.””
Daniel went quiet.
Maya watched her father’s face.
And she realized something.
Daniel wasn’t hiding anger.
He was hiding pain.
“You were lied to too,” Maya whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time all morning, they looked equally lost.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were several documents.
He placed the first page on the table.
Maya saw her name.
Her birthday.
Her signature.
But she also saw another name.
A name connected to her.
“What is that?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Something Vanessa changed.””
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Changed?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Maya, don’t.””
But this time, nobody listened.
Marcus turned the document around.
And Maya saw the original line beneath the correction.
A line that had been covered.
A line that revealed someone had tried to rewrite her own history.
Her hands started shaking.
“Why would someone change my records?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire whispered:
“Because they didn’t want anyone to know who your real family was.””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
The woman who raised her.
The woman holding scissors just hours earlier.
The woman who always told her family was everything.
“Vanessa…”
Her voice trembled.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
Then at Maya.
And the fear returned.
May you like
But this time, there was something else.
Guilt.
