Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden In Ink
The document sat between them like a weapon.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody needed to.
The damage had already been done.
Maya stared at the altered record.
A single line.
A single change.
A single decision someone had made years ago.
A decision that affected her entire life.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa didn’t move.
Maya stepped closer.
“Tell me what you changed.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You keep saying that.””
She pointed at the document.
“But everything you do starts with a lie.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Is it true?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“Is it true?””
The question carried years of frustration.
Years of things he ignored.
Vanessa looked away.
That answer was enough.
Daniel stepped back.
“You knew.””
“I had reasons.””
Maya almost smiled.
“Everyone has reasons.””
She looked at her father.
“Does that make everything okay?””
Daniel had no response.
Marcus carefully picked up the document.
“This was changed eleven years ago.””
Maya looked at him.
“Why eleven?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because that was when someone started looking for you.””
The room became quiet again.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Claire.
Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Your mother.””
Maya froze.
“My mother was looking for me?””
Claire nodded.
“She never stopped.””
Maya felt tears fall.
She hated that.
She hated that part of her still wanted to believe Vanessa.
Still wanted to believe the woman who raised her had a reason.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting that someone had stolen something from her.
Time.
Answers.
A relationship with someone who loved her.
“Where is she?””
Nobody spoke.
Maya looked at Claire.
“Where is my mother?””
Claire looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was worse than an answer.
Maya closed her eyes.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“No, don’t do that.””
Claire reached toward her.
Maya stepped back.
“I don’t need people to feel sorry for me.””
She looked at everyone.
“I need someone to tell me the truth.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That’s why I came.””
He opened the folder again.
“There is one more thing.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“No.””
Marcus ignored her.
Maya looked at him.
“What?””
He pulled out a photograph.
Old.
Slightly faded.
He placed it on the table.
Maya stared.
Three people.
A young woman.
A little girl.
And another child.
Her breath caught.
Because the little girl looked familiar.
Too familiar.
“She was your sister,” Claire said softly.
Maya touched the photo.
“Lily.””
The name felt different now.
Real.
Not just a secret.
Not just a story.
A person.
A sister who had a face.
A sister who had once held someone’s hand.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t I know her?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I thought if you knew…”
She stopped.
Maya waited.
“If I knew what?””
Vanessa looked broken.
“If you knew everything, you would hate me.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel whispered:
“Vanessa…”
But Maya didn’t look away.
“Maybe I would.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“But at least it would be my choice.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at the clock.
“We need to leave soon.””
Maya frowned.
“Leave?””
Marcus nodded.
“There are people who don’t want this conversation to happen.””
A cold feeling moved through her.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?””
Everyone watched him.
He listened silently.
Then his face became serious.
“Maya.””
She looked up.
“What?””
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who sent the envelope knows you have it.””
Maya’s heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked toward the front door.
“It means they’re coming here.””
A sound interrupted them.
A car door closing outside.
Everyone froze.
Vanessa whispered something Maya had never heard from her before.
Fear.
“No…”
Maya looked at the door.
Marcus moved beside her.

And on the table, the sealed university envelope remained unopened.
Still holding the answer everyone had been trying to hide.
