Chapter 8: The Photograph That Changed Everything
Maya stared at the photograph.
The room disappeared.
The voices disappeared.
All she could see was the image in front of her.
Her mother.
Young.
Smiling.
Alive.
And standing beside her was Vanessa.
Not angry.
Not cold.
Not the woman Maya had known.
A different Vanessa.
A woman who looked happy.
A woman who looked like she belonged.
Maya slowly lifted her eyes.
“Explain.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No more saying my name like that.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Maya held up the photograph.
“You knew my mother.””
Everyone watched.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“How?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“We were friends.””
“Friends?””
Maya laughed softly.
“You were friends with my mother, but you never once mentioned her?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“It wasn’t simple.””
“Nothing is ever simple with you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa, tell her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No. I don’t.””
The words surprised Maya.
Because for the first time, Daniel wasn’t defending Vanessa.
He was demanding answers too.
Vanessa looked around the room.
At Maya.
At Daniel.
At Marcus.
At Claire.
And she finally seemed exhausted.
“She asked me for help.””
Maya froze.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
The room became silent.
Vanessa sat down.
Her voice became quieter.
“She was scared.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Of losing you.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“She left because she was scared of losing me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She believed someone was trying to take you away.””
Marcus looked at Robert.
“You didn’t tell her?””
Robert shook his head.
“I thought she deserved to hear it from Vanessa.””
Maya looked confused.
“Someone was trying to take me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Maya stood.
“Who?””
The second time was louder.
Vanessa’s hands trembled.
“Your biological father.””
The words hit the room.
Daniel went completely still.
Maya looked at him.
Her father.
The man who raised her.
The man who always seemed distant.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You promised.””
Vanessa looked at him.
Maya noticed.
Again.
Another secret between them.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Maya turned toward him.
“Dad.””
The word came out differently now.
Less like a daughter asking.
More like someone demanding the truth.
“Who is my biological father?””
Daniel looked away.
And that hurt more than any answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Maya.””
She looked at him.
“We need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who started all of this is still out there.””
Robert nodded.
“He knows the envelope reached her.””
Maya looked at the envelope.
Still sealed.
Still untouched.
“What is inside?””
Nobody answered.
She almost opened it right there.
Almost.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Maya looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She didn’t answer.
The ringing continued.
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t.””
Maya looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Because he knows.””
The phone stopped.
A second later, a message appeared.
Maya stared at the screen.
One sentence.
Her hands started shaking.
Marcus noticed.
“What does it say?””
Maya didn’t answer.
She turned the phone around.
Everyone looked.
The message read:
*I know you found the envelope. Ask Vanessa why she lied about Lily.*
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What is Lily?””
Maya looked up.
Her heart racing.
Because now she understood.
The secret wasn’t only about her mother.
It wasn’t only about her identity.
It was about Lily.
The sister who had disappeared before Maya was even born.
Vanessa stood slowly.
And for the first time, she didn’t look like someone hiding a secret.
She looked like someone remembering one.
“I never wanted you to know what happened to Lily.””
Maya stared.
“What happened?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
May you like
And before she could answer, someone knocked again.
But this time, everyone knew exactly who it was.
