Chapter 10: The Father at the Door
The hallway became completely still.
Brielle stared at the nurse.
“Richard Carter?””
The nurse nodded.
“He said you would know who he is.””
Brielle’s face changed.
Not the fear Marcus had seen before.
Something deeper.
A memory.
A wound that had never healed.
Daniel immediately stepped between Brielle and the door.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You know him?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Daniel looked toward Brielle.
“He’s the reason everything started.””
The nurse shifted uncomfortably.
“Should I tell him to leave?””
Brielle opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus looked at her.
“Brielle.””
She finally whispered:
“No.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“No?””
She swallowed.
“If he came here…”
Her hands trembled.
“He already knows.””
Marcus frowned.
“Knows what?””
Brielle looked at the hospital room.
At her daughter.
At Daniel.
At the years of secrets she had tried to bury.
“He knows the truth.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Brielle, you don’t owe him anything.””
She looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“But my daughter deserves to hear it from me.””
The nurse nodded.
“I’ll bring him in.””
The door closed.
The waiting began.
Marcus stood near the window, looking outside.
The city moved like nothing had happened.
Cars passed.
People walked.
Somewhere, other families were having normal days.
But his entire life had changed in a single afternoon.
He turned back.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me about him?””
Brielle sat beside her daughter’s bed.
“Because every time I talked about my father, I became that scared little girl again.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And you thought lying would fix it?””
“No.””
She lowered her head.
“I thought silence would.””
Daniel looked away.
“It never does.””
A few seconds later, the door opened.
Richard Carter walked inside.
He was older than the photograph.
His hair was gray.
His suit was expensive.
His posture was confident.
The kind of confidence that came from someone who had spent years getting what he wanted.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Brielle.
Then Daniel.
Then Marcus.
Finally, his granddaughter.
“I see everyone is here.””
Brielle stood.
“Why are you here?””
Richard smiled slightly.
“Is that how you greet your father?””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“It’s how I greet the person who ruined my life.””
The room went silent.
Richard didn’t react.
“You still blame me.””
“Yes.””
He looked disappointed.
“After all these years, you still refuse to understand.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you to her?””
Richard looked at him.
“And you must be Marcus.””
The way he said it made Marcus uncomfortable.
“You know my name.””
“Of course.””
Richard glanced at Brielle.
“She talks about you.””
Brielle immediately looked confused.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“She never told you?””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“Tell me what?””
Richard walked closer.
“She kept information from you.””
Brielle’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored her.
“Your wife was not hiding only a marriage.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“She’s not my wife.””
Richard smiled.
“Not yet.””
The words bothered Marcus more than they should have.
Richard looked around.
“You all think you understand what happened.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“We know enough.””
Richard laughed softly.
“No, Daniel. You know your version.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“And you know yours.””
Richard looked at Brielle.
“Tell him.””
Brielle stayed silent.
Marcus looked at her.
“What is he talking about?””
Richard answered.
“She never told you why she really left Daniel.””
Marcus felt exhausted.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
Brielle closed her eyes.
“I left because I was afraid.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“She left because she made a mistake.””
Brielle’s expression changed.
“Stop.””
Richard continued.
“She thought running would protect everyone.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“What mistake?””
Richard reached into his jacket.
He removed a small folder.
Not an envelope.
A folder filled with documents.
Brielle immediately stepped forward.
“Where did you get those?””
Richard smiled.
“You should know.””
Her face went pale.
Marcus noticed.
“Brielle?””
Richard placed the folder on the table.
“These are records from the night she disappeared.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Where did you find those?””
Richard looked at him.
“You don’t want to know.””
Marcus opened the folder.
The first page was a police report.
The second was a statement.
The third stopped him.
Because it had Brielle’s signature.
A statement claiming Daniel had threatened her.
Marcus looked up.
“Brielle…”
She looked away.
“I was scared.””
Richard nodded.
“She signed it because she thought I would protect her.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“And did you?””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Richard continued.
“Because protection always comes with a price.””
Brielle’s eyes filled.
“You controlled me.””
Richard looked at her.
“I taught you survival.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You taught me fear.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Marcus noticed.
He wasn’t used to being challenged.
Then the hospital monitor beside Brielle’s daughter suddenly changed.
A sharp alarm filled the room.
Everyone turned.
The girl’s eyes opened.
“Mom…”
Brielle rushed to her.
“I’m here.””
The girl looked past her.
At Richard.
Her face went pale.
And she whispered:
“You.””
Richard froze.
May you like
The girl continued:
“You’re the reason she ran.””
