Chapter 4: The Man Who Walked Through the Crowd

The chair scraped against the lawn one more time.

Every guest turned.

The man standing near the back row didn’t rush.

He didn’t look angry.

He didn’t look nervous.

He simply stood there, wearing a dark suit, holding the weight of a secret that had just shattered a wedding.

Marcus stared at him.

Brielle looked like the air had been knocked out of her.

“No,” she whispered.

The man took one slow step forward.

“Hello, Brielle.””

Her face went pale.

Marcus heard the way she said his name.

Not like a stranger.

Like someone who had haunted her memories.

Evelyn remained still beside Marcus.

She had known this moment would come.

The guests began whispering.

“Who is that?””

“Was he invited?””

“Is that her husband?””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Answer me.””

She didn’t.

Her eyes stayed locked on the man approaching them.

The man stopped several feet away.

Close enough for everyone to see him.

Close enough for Marcus to see the matching expression on Brielle’s face.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

The man looked at Marcus.

“You must be Marcus.””

Marcus tightened his grip around the marriage record.

“Who are you?””

The man glanced at Brielle.

Then back at him.

“My name is Daniel.””

A silence followed.

Marcus waited.

Daniel continued.

“I’m Brielle’s husband.””

The words hit harder than Marcus expected.

Even though he already knew.

Even though Evelyn had warned him.

Hearing it from the man himself made the entire wedding feel unreal.

Brielle immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You said I would never see you again.””

“Not here.””

“Where else?””

His voice wasn’t loud.

That made it worse.

He wasn’t trying to create a scene.

He was simply stating a fact.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You knew he was alive.””

Brielle opened her mouth.

“Marcus…”

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought he was gone.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“Gone?””

Brielle looked at him.

“You disappeared.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“You disappeared.””

The guests became completely silent.

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Now you understand why I came.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the woman in front of him.

“I understand that everyone knew something except me.””

That sentence hurt Brielle.

“Marcus, I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“From the truth.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then tell me.””

Brielle turned sharply.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Marcus looked between them.

“No. Let him.””

The photographer slowly lowered his camera.

Nobody was taking pictures anymore.

This wasn’t a wedding.

It was an exposure.

Daniel looked at Brielle.

“I didn’t come here to ruin your life.””

She swallowed.

“Then why are you here?””

“Because I got an invitation.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Not the same as Evelyn’s.

A wedding invitation.

With Brielle and Marcus’s names printed across the front.

Brielle stared.

“How did you get that?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You sent it.””

Her expression collapsed.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“No.””

Daniel walked closer and held it up.

“Your name. Your handwriting.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

She looked away.

Evelyn watched carefully.

“Marcus, there is more.””

He turned toward his mother.

“More?””

She nodded.

“The marriage record wasn’t the first thing I found.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

“And you told him?””

“I tried.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“You two knew each other?””

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation made Marcus angry.

“What else don’t I know?””

Daniel looked down.

Then said quietly:

“Your mother contacted me three weeks ago.””

Marcus turned.

“Mom?””

Evelyn looked at her son.

“I needed answers.””

“You went behind my back?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were investigating the woman I was about to marry.””

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“Because I saw things you didn’t.””

Brielle’s voice rose.

“This is insane.””

She looked around.

“At my wedding, everyone is acting like I’m some kind of criminal.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re leaving out the part where you married me.””

Brielle flinched.

“And the part where you told everyone I was dead.””

The guests gasped.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Dead?””

She closed her eyes.

“I never said that.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You told people I disappeared.””

“That’s different.””

“No.””

His voice became heavier.

“You told them because you wanted them to believe there was no one left to ask questions.””

Marcus stared at Brielle.

The woman who had promised him honesty.

The woman who had looked him in the eye during every conversation about trust.

“How long were you married?””

Daniel answered.

“Eight years.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

Eight years.

A lifetime compared to the months he had known her.

Brielle whispered:

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

Her eyes filled.

Before she could respond, Daniel reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Not a marriage record.

Something else.

Something older.

Something worn.

He looked directly at Marcus.

“This is the reason she left me.””

Brielle moved instantly.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Marcus noticed her reaction.

She wasn’t afraid of the past.

She was afraid of him revealing it.

Daniel unfolded the paper.

And the first line was enough to make Marcus stop breathing.

Because it wasn’t about a divorce.

May you like

It wasn’t about a marriage.

It was about a child.
