Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew

The wedding lawn went silent.

Evelyn lowered the phone slowly.

Marcus watched her expression.

He had never seen his mother look afraid before.

Not when his father passed away.

Not when she lost her business.

Not when life became difficult.

But now…

She looked terrified.

“Mom?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“Mom, what happened?””

She looked at Brielle.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Marcus.

The color drained from her face.

“They found her.””

Daniel froze.

Brielle’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Found who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Our daughter.””

Marcus stared.

The words felt impossible.

“The hospital has your daughter?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“She was brought in this morning.””

Brielle stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, she wasn’t supposed to be there.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She collapsed.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

“Brielle.””

Her eyes filled.

“I knew she was sick.””

The sentence hit harder than anything else.

Marcus shook his head.

“You knew?””

“I was handling it.””

“Handling it?””

His voice rose.

“You hid a child from me and now you’re saying you were handling it?””

Brielle looked broken.

“I didn’t want anyone involved.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Anyone?””

His voice trembled.

“She’s your daughter.””

Brielle looked at him.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

The guests stood quietly.

Some looked away.

Some watched with tears in their eyes.

The beautiful wedding had become a place where every hidden truth was finally coming out.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You knew about the child?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Not everything.””

“How much?””

She looked down.

“I knew Brielle had a daughter.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You knew?””

“I found out while investigating.””

“Before today?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me come here?””

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

“I hoped Brielle would tell you herself.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You hoped?””

“I wanted to believe she would choose honesty.””

Brielle closed her eyes.

“I was going to.””

Marcus turned.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Because it makes you feel better.””

The words broke something in her.

She looked down.

For the first time, she didn’t fight back.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus.””

He looked at him.

“I know what this feels like.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Finding out the person you love built walls around the truth.””

Daniel looked at Brielle.

“I lived with that.””

Brielle wiped her tears.

“You don’t get to act like you’re innocent.””

Daniel stopped.

A long silence followed.

Marcus noticed.

There it was again.

A missing piece.

“You’re both hiding something.””

Nobody responded.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“First you say he disappeared.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“You say she left.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Your mother says there’s more.””

His voice became colder.

“I’m done hearing half the truth.””

Brielle whispered:

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He held up the marriage record.

“No more secrets.””

Daniel looked toward the entrance of the garden.

“We need to go to the hospital.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if she wakes up…”

Daniel stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“If she wakes up what?””

Daniel looked at Brielle.

And for the first time, Brielle looked completely defeated.

Daniel said:

“She’s going to tell you what her mother has been hiding.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Her mother?””

Brielle’s face went pale.

“Daniel, don’t.””

But he continued.

“Your daughter knows why Brielle left.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“What does that mean?””

Brielle looked toward the ground.

“I thought she forgot.””

Marcus froze.

“Forgot what?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“The night she took our daughter and disappeared…”

He looked directly at Marcus.

“She didn’t run away from me.””

A pause.

“She ran away because our daughter saw something.””

The wind moved through the flowers.

The guests held their breath.

Marcus whispered:

“What did she see?””

Brielle looked at him.

Her eyes filled with regret.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“She saw me hurt someone.””
