Chapter 5: The Truth She Buried
Nobody spoke.
The wedding guests stood frozen beneath the white canopy, surrounded by flowers that suddenly felt like decorations at someone else’s funeral.
Marcus stared at the paper in Daniel’s hand.
“A child?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Brielle immediately shook her head.
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Because it’s true?””
Brielle’s face tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Daniel looked around.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who is the child?””
Brielle looked at him.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
That scared him more.
“Brielle.””
She whispered:
“Marcus…”
“Who?””
The silence answered before she did.
Daniel lowered the paper.
“Our daughter.””
A gasp moved through the crowd.
Brielle closed her eyes.
Marcus felt the world shift.
“Our?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“You have a daughter?””
She wiped at her face.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Again.
That same word.
That same excuse.
“When?””
Brielle looked down.
“I didn’t know how.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You didn’t know how to tell me you had a husband?””
She shook her head.
“I thought Daniel was gone.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
The anger disappeared.
Something sad replaced it.
“You always tell the story where I vanish.””
He stepped closer.
“But you never tell people what happened the night I lost everything.””
Brielle looked away.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“You get to tell Marcus whatever version makes you look innocent. Today, he hears mine.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Brielle.
Then answered.
“Seven years ago, Brielle took our daughter and left.””
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
Brielle’s voice was quiet.
“Because I was scared.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Everyone waited.
“She was scared because someone was threatening her.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“What?””
Brielle’s head snapped up.
“Daniel.””
He continued.
“I didn’t come here to hurt her.””
“Then why reveal this?””
“Because she built a new life on a lie.””
Marcus looked at the child’s name on the paper.
“Where is your daughter now?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was different.
Not fear.
Pain.
“She’s twelve.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Twelve?””
“Yes.””
“And Brielle never told me?””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
Marcus turned away.
The lawn suddenly felt too small.
Every flower.
Every chair.
Every guest.
Everything represented a future that might never have existed.
Brielle stepped toward him.
“Marcus, please let me explain.””
He looked back.
“Explain what?””
She had no answer.
“Explain why you hid your marriage?””
Silence.
“Explain why you hid your daughter?””
More silence.
“Explain why you invited your husband to our wedding?””
Her eyes widened.
“I didn’t.””
Daniel looked down.
Then quietly said:
“She did.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I received the invitation two months ago.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel showed the screen.
A message.
A number.
A conversation.
Marcus stared.
His face changed.
Brielle noticed.
“Marcus, it’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
She looked at the phone.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Evelyn.
Nobody answered.
Marcus took the phone.
The message was simple.
A warning.
One sentence.
“Come to the wedding if you want the truth.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“You sent this?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn looked confused.
“I didn’t.””
The guests began whispering again.
This wasn’t just a hidden marriage.
Someone had wanted this confrontation to happen.
Someone had planned for Daniel to appear.
Marcus looked at everyone around him.
“Who knew?””
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came from the crowd.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
A woman stood from her chair.
Brielle’s face changed instantly.
“Mom?””
The woman slowly walked forward.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
She looked directly at Brielle.
“I knew everything.””
Marcus stared.
Brielle looked horrified.
“You weren’t supposed to come.””
Her mother stopped.
“I had to.””
“Why?””
The older woman looked at Marcus.
“Because if I stayed silent any longer…”
She glanced at Daniel.
“…someone else was going to tell him the truth.””
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“What truth?””
Brielle’s mother looked at him.
Then at her daughter.
And said:
“The man standing here is not the only person Brielle lied to.””
Brielle’s eyes filled with panic.
Marcus looked around the wedding.
Another secret.
Another person.
Another piece of a life he thought he understood.
Then Evelyn’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn slowly raised her eyes.
“It’s the hospital.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus stared.
“Why would a hospital be calling you?””
Evelyn answered.
May you like
And after three seconds…
Her face went completely pale.
