Chapter 3: The Guest Nobody Invited
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody moved.
The wedding guests looked around the lawn, searching for the source of the sound.
Marcus stood beside the marriage table, still holding the official record.
Evelyn stood near him, her champagne suit soaked and heavy.
Brielle looked like she had forgotten how to breathe.
“Answer it,” Marcus said.
Her eyes snapped toward him.
“What?””
“Answer the phone.””
“I don’t know whose it is.””
But she said it too quickly.
Marcus noticed.
“So you recognize it.””
Brielle looked away.
The phone stopped.
For one second, there was silence.
Then a message notification appeared.
A small sound.
A tiny sound.
But it felt louder than the music had been.
Marcus looked toward the crowd.
“Who has the phone?””
No one answered.
Evelyn slowly walked forward.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“Do you know who it is?””
Evelyn didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Marcus turned back toward Brielle.
“You knew someone was coming.””
“No.””
“You knew.””
Brielle shook her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“Please what?””
Her voice cracked.
“Please don’t destroy everything based on what she’s saying.””
Marcus looked at the document.
Then at the wedding.
Then at her.
“You already destroyed everything when you lied.””
The words made Brielle flinch.
For the first time, she looked less angry.
More desperate.
She stepped closer.
“Marcus, I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She stayed quiet.
“After we got married?””
“No.””
“After we had children?””
“No.””
“After I spent years believing something that wasn’t true?””
Her eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Fear doesn’t excuse deception.””
Brielle looked at her.
“You have no idea what I went through.””
“Maybe not.””
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“But Marcus deserved the choice.””
The guests watched silently.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked angry.
Some looked at Brielle with sympathy.
Marcus noticed that too.
This wasn’t simple.
It wasn’t just betrayal.
There was a story underneath.
A story nobody had told him.
“Who is he?”” Marcus asked again.
Brielle closed her eyes.
“His name…”
She stopped.
The entire wedding waited.
Then she looked past Marcus.
Past Evelyn.
Toward the guests.
“No.””
Marcus followed her gaze.
“What?””
Brielle whispered:
“He wasn’t supposed to be here.””
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
Because she wasn’t looking at the door.
She wasn’t looking at the parking area.
She was looking directly at the people sitting in front of her.
Evelyn walked closer.
“Marcus, there’s something else you need to know.””
He turned.
“What?””
“The marriage record wasn’t the only thing I found.””
Brielle’s face changed again.
“Stop talking.””
Evelyn reached into her handbag.
Marcus stared.
“Another document?””
“No.””
She pulled out a photograph.
An old photograph.
Brielle saw it.
And for the first time that day…
She looked terrified.
Marcus took the photo.
The image showed Brielle.
Younger.
Standing beside a man.
Both smiling.
Both wearing rings.
His eyes moved to the bottom corner.
There was a date.
A date from years before they met.
Marcus looked up.
“Who is this?””
Brielle didn’t answer.
Evelyn did.
“That’s the man she buried.””
Marcus frowned.
“Buried?””
Brielle suddenly grabbed the photograph.
“Enough!””
Her voice echoed across the lawn.
The guests jumped.
Marcus stared at her.
“What are you hiding?””
Brielle looked at the picture in her hand.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Marcus.
Her voice became barely audible.
“I didn’t leave him.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“What?””
Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t leave him.””
Evelyn watched her carefully.
“And now you need to tell him the rest.””
A shadow moved among the guests.
A chair scraped against the grass.
Everyone turned.
Someone stood.
Marcus looked toward the movement.
Brielle stopped breathing.
Because the person standing there…
May you like
Was the one person she prayed would never come to her wedding.
And he was walking toward them.
