Chapter 11: The Truth Written in Blood

Richard Carter stood completely still.

For the first time since entering the room, he looked uncertain.

The twelve-year-old girl stared at him.

Not like a stranger.

Like someone from a nightmare.

Marcus noticed.

“You know him.””

The girl didn’t answer.

Brielle moved closer.

“Sweetheart…”

The girl looked at her mother.

“Why is he here?””

Brielle couldn’t speak.

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t remember everything.””

The girl immediately pulled back.

“Yes, I do.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Wait.””

He looked at his daughter.

“What do you remember?””

The girl looked at him.

Then at Brielle.

Then at Richard.

“I remember him coming to our house.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You never told me that.””

She whispered:

“I tried to forget.””

Richard shook his head.

“You were a child. You misunderstood.””

The girl’s eyes filled with anger.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“I heard you.””

Richard stared.

“Heard what?””

The girl swallowed.

“You told Mom she belonged to you.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt sick.

Brielle looked down.

Daniel clenched his fists.

Richard’s calm expression finally cracked.

“Children misunderstand adult conversations.””

“No.””

The girl looked at him.

“I understood.””

Brielle sat beside her.

Tears rolled down her face.

“I’m sorry.””

The girl looked at her.

“For what?””

“For making you carry this.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Marcus watched the family standing together.

Broken.

But finally honest.

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You believe them?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Because he had learned something.

The truth wasn’t always the first story.

Or the loudest story.

Or the story told with the most confidence.

He looked at Richard.

“I believe what I see.””

Richard smiled.

“And what do you see?””

Marcus looked around the room.

“A man who came here after twelve years just to control the conversation.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“You don’t know me.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“But I know enough.””

Richard looked at Brielle.

“You brought strangers into family matters.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I brought the truth into my life.””

Richard laughed.

“Truth?””

He pointed toward the documents.

“You lied.””

Brielle nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“I lied.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I hurt people.””

Then she looked at Marcus.

“I hurt you.””

Her voice broke.

“But I was also afraid.””

Richard watched her.

“And now?””

Brielle looked at him.

“Now I’m done being afraid.””

The words changed the room.

Even Marcus noticed.

This was the first time she had faced her father without shrinking.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You think this makes you innocent?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at his daughter.

“I made mistakes too.””

The girl watched him.

“I should have protected you better.””

A tear moved down her cheek.

Marcus looked at the two men.

One who admitted his failures.

One who refused to.

That difference said everything.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“There’s still one thing we haven’t answered.””

Everyone looked at her.

Evelyn pointed toward the wedding invitation.

“The person who brought Daniel to the wedding.””

Marcus remembered.

Someone had planned all of this.

Someone wanted the truth exposed.

Richard looked away.

Just for a second.

But Marcus saw it.

“You know.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You know who sent the invitation.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

Richard noticed.

“You think you’re clever?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“I think you’re hiding something.””

Richard smiled.

“Everyone here is hiding something.””

That was true.

But Marcus wasn’t finished.

He looked at Brielle.

“Who else knew about Daniel?””

Brielle hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone.””

“Who?””

Her face changed.

Someone she didn’t want to name.

“Marcus…”

“Who?””

Brielle looked at Daniel.

Then at her father.

Finally, she said:

“My sister.””

Everyone froze.

Evelyn frowned.

“Your sister?””

Brielle nodded slowly.

“She’s the only person who knew the entire story.””

Marcus felt another wave of confusion.

“You have a sister?””

Brielle closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Richard smiled faintly.

And that smile was the first thing that truly frightened Marcus.

Because Richard looked like someone who had been waiting for that name to be spoken.

“What?””

Marcus asked.

Richard looked toward the door.

“She’s already here.””

Everyone turned.

The door opened slowly.

A woman stood there.

Brielle’s age.

Same eyes.

Same family resemblance.

But unlike Brielle…

She looked calm.

Almost relieved.

She held a phone in her hand.

And on the screen was the message that started everything.

“Come to the wedding if you want the truth.””

The woman looked at Brielle.

“I’m sorry it took this long.””

Brielle whispered:

“Claire…”

The woman stepped inside.

“I had to make sure he couldn’t silence you again.””

Marcus stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

“I’m Brielle’s sister.””

May you like

A pause.

“And I’m the person who sent the invitation.””
