Chapter 13: The Brother Who Knew Everything
Nobody spoke.
Richard Carter’s words hung in the hospital room.
“My son.””
Marcus looked around.
Brielle’s face changed immediately.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“No.””
The word escaped her lips before she could stop it.
Claire looked at her sister.
“You know.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
But nobody believed her.
Not anymore.
Marcus watched her carefully.
Another secret.
Another person.
Another piece of the family history hidden from him.
“Who is your brother?””
Brielle looked down.
Richard answered.
“His name is Adrian.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You brought him into this?””
Richard looked at her.
“I didn’t.””
A strange silence followed.
Marcus noticed.
Something about that answer was different.
Not defensive.
Fearful.
“Where is he?””
Richard didn’t respond.
Then his phone rang again.
The same number.
This time, he answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone listened.
Richard’s face slowly changed.
“What do you mean he left?””
A pause.
“No, don’t let him—”
He stopped.
The call ended.
Marcus stared.
“Where is he?””
Richard looked at Brielle.
“He’s coming here.””
Brielle stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel moved closer.
“What did he do?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“He was always worse than our father.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How?””
Claire looked at Brielle.
“Because Adrian didn’t need control.””
She swallowed.
“He enjoyed the damage.””
Brielle’s daughter looked frightened.
“Mom?””
Brielle immediately moved beside her.
“I’m here.””
The girl looked at her.
“Is he the reason we left?””
Brielle froze.
Claire answered softly.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“You knew your brother was involved?””
She shook her head.
“I thought he was gone.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Marcus’s frustration rose.
“But somehow every person who disappears comes back at the exact moment my life falls apart.””
Nobody argued.
Because he was right.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
The room went quiet.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Late thirties.
Sharp suit.
Cold expression.
He looked almost amused.
His eyes moved around the room.
First to Richard.
Then Claire.
Then Daniel.
Finally, Brielle.
“Hello, sister.””
Brielle’s face went pale.
“Adrian.””
Marcus watched him.
There was something unsettling about him.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Confidence.
Like he already knew how this story ended.
Adrian smiled.
“I see everyone finally met.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Still angry?””
“You ruined my family.””
Adrian laughed.
“No.””
He looked at Brielle.
“She did that herself.””
Brielle’s hands shook.
“You sent the message.””
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
Adrian looked at him.
“You must be Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“I wanted you to know who you were marrying.””
Marcus frowned.
“You’re pretending you did this for me?””
“No.””
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“I did it because my sister forgot where she came from.””
Brielle looked disgusted.
“I spent my entire life trying to escape.””
“And look where you ended up.””
He gestured around the hospital.
“A man you lied to. A husband you abandoned. A daughter who remembers everything.””
The words were cruel.
Brielle looked down.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You always wanted to be the victim.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Still protecting her?””
“Yes.””
“After she left us?””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“She left because of you.””
Adrian laughed.
“That’s what she told you?””
Marcus watched Brielle.
She looked terrified.
Not because Adrian was lying.
Because he knew exactly where to hurt her.
Adrian turned toward Marcus.
“You want the real story?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Adrian continued anyway.
“Brielle didn’t just leave her marriage.””
He looked at Daniel.
“She destroyed it.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“She was afraid.””
Adrian smiled.
“Everyone is afraid.””
He looked back at Marcus.
“But fear doesn’t erase choices.””
Marcus hated that part of him understood.
Everyone here had made mistakes.
Everyone had caused pain.
The difference was intention.
“What do you want?””
Marcus asked.
Adrian looked surprised.
“Direct.””
“What do you want?””
Adrian looked at Brielle.
“I want my sister to admit the truth.””
Brielle whispered:
“What truth?””
“That you weren’t running from us.””
He stepped closer.
“You were running because you knew what you did.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“What does he mean?””
Brielle’s eyes filled.
Adrian smiled.
“Ask her about the money.””
Silence.
Marcus frowned.
“What money?””
Brielle closed her eyes.
“Adrian.””
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Brielle’s daughter looked confused.
“Mom?””
Marcus felt the room shifting again.
“What money?””
Brielle whispered:
“My father’s company.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Adrian smiled.
“She didn’t tell you she inherited millions?””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Brielle.
She looked away.
And that hurt more than the money itself.
Because she had promised him honesty.
Brielle whispered:
“It wasn’t like that.””
Adrian laughed.
“Of course not.””
He stepped toward the door.
“You should ask her why she really wanted a simple life.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Before she could answer, Adrian stopped.
“Oh, and Marcus?””
Marcus looked at him.
Adrian smiled.
“The person you think betrayed you first…”
A pause.
“Wasn’t the person who lied the most.””
Then he walked away.
And Marcus realized something terrifying.

The wedding mystery wasn’t about who Brielle married.
It was about who had been controlling the story all along.
