Chapter 10: The Mother’s Hidden Choice
For a few seconds, nobody in the kitchen moved.
My father stared at Vanessa like he had never seen her before.
“My mother?””
The words came out quietly.
Almost like he was asking her to repeat something impossible.
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
His reaction wasn’t anger.
It was disbelief.
The kind of disbelief that happens when the foundation beneath your entire life cracks.
“My mother died eight years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how could she be involved?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because what she did happened before she died.””
My father pulled out the chair and sat down.
The man who had spent the last twenty-four hours fighting for answers suddenly looked tired.
“Start from the beginning.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
And for the first time, she didn’t look like someone trying to escape.
She looked like someone finally accepting the punishment of telling the truth.
“When I met you, I didn’t know your family was hiding anything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then when did you find out?””
“After Jordan was born.””
I watched my father carefully.
Every mention of my birth seemed to hurt him.
Vanessa continued.
“Your mother, Eleanor, came to the hospital.””
My father frowned.
“She visited you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She came to see Jordan.””
The room went silent.
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because she already knew about Derrick.””
That name again.
The name that had followed me my entire life without me knowing.
“What did my mother know?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“She knew Derrick was dangerous.””
My father stood.
“And she never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice became softer.
“Because she was protecting you.””
My father laughed.
A painful sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He shook his head.
“But nobody understands what protection looks like when you’re the person being lied to.””
Nobody argued.
Because he was right.
I looked at my father.
I had spent my whole life thinking he was the person with answers.
Now he was discovering he had been the last person to know.
“What did Derrick do?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Before I met your father, Derrick threatened me.””
“Why?””
“Because he didn’t want me to leave.””
She paused.
“He believed Jordan belonged to him.””
My fists tightened.
“I was a baby.””
“I know.””
“Then why did everyone fight over me like I was an object?””
Vanessa looked destroyed.
“Because adults made mistakes.””
I looked away.
That answer wasn’t enough.
Marcus noticed.
He stepped closer to me.
“Jordan.””
I looked at him.
His expression softened.
“You have every right to be angry.””
Those words meant more than he realized.
Because everyone else had been explaining.
Only he understood.
Vanessa continued.
“Your grandmother found out Derrick was threatening me.””
Marcus stared.
“And she helped?””
Vanessa nodded.
“At first.””
The room changed.
Because that one word mattered.
“At first?””
Vanessa looked nervous again.
“She wanted to protect you, Marcus.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“But?””
“She didn’t trust me.””
The words surprised everyone.
Vanessa continued.
“She thought I was bringing chaos into your life.””
My father looked away.
“That sounds like her.””
“She believed Derrick would always come back.””
“And he did.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Ava spoke quietly.
“So Grandma changed the records?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wanted to remove Derrick from our lives completely.””
I frowned.
“But why change Dad’s records?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Derrick was listed as your biological father.””
Marcus looked confused.
“That still doesn’t explain why my mother changed anything.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She changed the records because she wanted Marcus listed as the father.””
My father froze.
“What?””
“She wanted you to have a clean life.””
I looked at Marcus.
He stared at Vanessa.
“She changed my records?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
Vanessa nodded.
The silence afterward was painful.
Because even though the choice had been made out of fear and love, it was still a choice taken away from him.
My father sat back down.
“She stole the truth from me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus looked at me.
“But she gave me something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He smiled sadly.
“Eighteen years with you.””
My throat tightened.
But before I could respond, my father’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
He picked it up.
The screen showed an unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his face changed.
“What hospital?””
My mother went pale.
Marcus stood.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then he looked at us.
And the fear returned.
“They found the nurse.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
My father listened.
May you like
Then whispered:
“She’s awake.””
