Chapter 8: The Truth About Ava
I read the sentence three times.
Then a fourth.
Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The paper shook in my hand.
Ava noticed.
“Jordan?””
I looked at her.
My little sister.
The girl who used to steal my headphones.
The girl who cried when I left for college visits.
The girl who still knocked on my bedroom door even when she knew I was annoyed.
She looked scared.
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t answer.
My father walked closer.
“Give me that.””
I handed it to him.
Marcus read the document.
And I watched the same thing happen again.
The same shock.
The same disbelief.
The same pain.
“Vanessa.””
Her name came out like a warning.
My mother covered her face.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at Ava.
Then back at her.
“Not another lie.””
Ava stepped backward.
“Mom?””
Vanessa rushed toward her.
“No, baby.””
Ava moved away.
“Why is everyone looking at me like that?””
Nobody spoke.
That silence destroyed her.
“Why?””
Her voice became louder.
“What does it say?””
I looked at the paper.
Then at my sister.
And I hated that I knew before anyone said it.
Derrick spoke.
“Ava isn’t Marcus’s daughter.””
The room stopped.
Ava stared at him.
Then laughed.
A small, confused laugh.
“That’s not funny.””
Nobody laughed.
Her face changed.
“No.””
She looked at Mom.
“Tell him he’s lying.””
Vanessa couldn’t.
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mom.””
“I’m sorry.””
The words broke her.
She turned toward my father.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked like someone had punched him.
“Ava…”
She stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because the truth was worse than any lie.
Ava covered her mouth.
“No.””
I moved toward her.
“Ava.””
She shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Her voice was small.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
The anger hit me immediately.
“You knew this whole time?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She started crying.
“When you were ready.””
I stared at her.
“Were we ever ready?””
No answer.
My father sat down.
The strongest man I knew looked completely broken.
“I raised two children who weren’t biologically mine.””
His voice was almost a whisper.
Vanessa looked at him.
“But you loved them.””
He looked up.
“Don’t.””
The pain in his voice made her stop.
“I loved them because they were mine.””
Ava turned away.
“I need air.””
She walked toward the door.
I followed.
“Ava.””
She stopped.
“Did you know?””
The question hurt.
“No.””
She nodded.
“I thought maybe everyone knew except me.””
My chest tightened.
“Never.””
She wiped her tears.
“Then why does it feel like I’m the last person to know everything about my own life?””
I had no answer.
Because she was right.
Outside, the night air hit my face.
Ava stood on the porch, staring into the darkness.
“I don’t know who I am.””
I stood beside her.
“You’re Ava.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I mean before that.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Then the front door opened.
Marcus stepped outside.
He stood there quietly.
Ava looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she asked:
“Do you still want me?””
My father’s face broke.
He walked forward immediately.
“Ava.””
She cried.
“Because I’m not yours.””
He shook his head.
“Stop.””
His voice trembled.
“I need you to hear me.””
She looked at him.
“You are my daughter.””
“But—”
“No.””
He knelt in front of her.
“I was there when you took your first steps.””
Tears filled his eyes.
“I was there when you were scared of thunderstorms.””
His voice cracked.
“I was there when you got your first basketball trophy and pretended you didn’t care.””
Ava cried harder.
“I know.””
Marcus touched her shoulder.
“And I will be there tomorrow.””
Ava collapsed into him.
And for the first time that night, someone in our family stopped pretending they weren’t hurting.
But inside the house, Vanessa was still standing with Derrick.
And when I looked back through the window, I saw something that made my blood run cold.
She wasn’t looking at Derrick with fear anymore.
She was looking at him with guilt.

Because there was still one secret left.
And this one was bigger than both of us.
