Chapter 3: The Name On The Screen

Nobody moved.

The phone continued vibrating.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

My mother stared at the screen like it was something dangerous.

My father slowly turned his head toward her.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus walked toward the dresser.

My mother stepped in front of him.

“Don’t.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Move.””

“Marcus, please.””

“Move.””

The way he said it made Ava grab my arm.

I looked down at her.

She was trying so hard not to cry.

My little sister had always believed our parents could fix anything.

A bad grade.

A broken phone.

A nightmare.

She believed adults had answers.

But standing there, watching my mother panic and my father break apart, I realized something.

Sometimes adults were the reason children were afraid.

My father reached for the phone.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“What are you hiding?””

Her fingers slowly fell away.

The phone stopped vibrating.

The room became quiet again.

Then it started ringing one more time.

My father picked it up.

The screen was still visible.

He read the name.

And his entire expression changed.

I had never seen my father look that way.

Like someone had reached inside his chest and taken the air out.

“Who is this?”” he asked.

Vanessa whispered.

“Don’t answer.””

My father looked at her.

“Why?””

No response.

“Why shouldn’t I answer?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because if you do…”

She stopped.

My father pressed the accept button.

Everyone froze.

He put the phone to his ear.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

His face changed.

I watched every emotion move across him.

Confusion.

Shock.

Recognition.

Then anger.

“Who gave you this number?””

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“No, Marcus, listen to me.””

But he held up a hand.

The voice on the phone said something.

I couldn’t hear the words.

Only my father’s reaction.

“What did you say?””

Another pause.

His eyes moved toward the cash.

Then the duffel bag.

Then me.

“What do you mean he already knows?””

My heart dropped.

He was talking about me.

The person on the other end continued.

My father’s grip tightened around the phone.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“You need to tell me the truth right now.””

Vanessa started crying harder.

“Marcus, please.””

He ignored her.

“Who else knows?””

Silence.

Then my father looked at Ava.

My sister immediately looked down.

The fear in the room became something I could almost touch.

My father ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he looked at my mother.

“You were never trying to leave because of me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus…”

“You were trying to leave because of something you knew was coming.””

She closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her face.

My father stepped back.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then Ava.

Then the money.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I was trying to get them away before you found out…”

She stopped.

My father waited.

I waited.

Ava waited.

And then my mother looked directly at my father with a terrified expression.

“Before you found out that your family was never what you thought it was.””

Marcus froze.

The cash remained in his hand.

Jordan’s fingers stayed locked around the duffel bag.

May you like

Ava cried silently in the doorway.

And Vanessa stood there, knowing the next words would change all of their lives.
