Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Knew My Name
Nobody breathed.
Not really.
It felt like the entire house was waiting.
Waiting for someone to move.
Waiting for someone to admit this was all a nightmare.
But nightmares ended.
This didn’t.
The voice came again.
“Vanessa, open the door.””
My father looked at her.
“You invited him here?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Marcus noticed.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then how does he know we’re here?””
My mother had no response.
I looked at the front door downstairs.
A stranger was standing outside our house.
A man who knew my mother.
A man who knew my name.
A man my entire family had been running from.
Marcus walked toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his hand.
“Don’t.””
He looked back.
“What?””
“Let me talk to him.””
My father stared.
“No.””
“Marcus.””
“You spent eighteen years making decisions without me.””
He pulled away.
“You don’t get to do it now.””
Ava whispered.
“Dad…”
Marcus stopped.
The way she said it made him turn.
She wasn’t calling him Dad because she wasn’t sure.
She was calling him Dad because she was scared.
And that seemed to bring him back.
He walked down slowly.
I followed.
Ava followed me.
Vanessa stayed behind us.
The living room felt unfamiliar.
Like our own house had become someone else’s.
Marcus reached the front door.
He looked through the window.
Then froze.
I stood behind him.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
His face was impossible to read.
Finally, he unlocked the door.
Vanessa screamed.
“Marcus, no!””
The door opened.
A man stood outside.
He looked older than I expected.
Late forties maybe.
Black jacket.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked like it had carried years of anger.
He looked at Marcus first.
Then past him.
Straight at me.
My stomach dropped.
Because he didn’t look surprised.
He looked relieved.
“There he is.””
Nobody spoke.
The man smiled slightly.
“Jordan.””
Hearing my name from his mouth made my skin crawl.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“How do you know my son?””
The man looked at him.
“Your son?””
A long pause.
Then he smiled again.
“You still don’t know everything, do you?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Leave.””
The man ignored him.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You really were going to run.””
Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs.
Tears were already falling.
“I told you never to come here.””
The man shook his head.
“And I told you secrets don’t stay buried forever.””
Marcus moved closer.
“You need to leave my property.””
The man laughed softly.
“Property?””
He looked around.
“Interesting word.””
Then he looked at me again.
“Jordan, do you know why your mother gave you that money?””
I didn’t answer.
The man continued.
“Because she knew I was coming back.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Yes.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
The man reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here to give Jordan something.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What is that?””
The man held it up.
“Proof.””
My heart started pounding.
“Proof of what?””
The man looked at me.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
The confidence disappeared.
He looked almost sorry.
“Proof that your mother didn’t tell you the whole truth.””
Vanessa whispered.
“Derrick, don’t.””
He ignored her.
Marcus took the envelope from his hand.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like it could explode.
He opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
I watched my father’s face change.
The color drained from it.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
Still nothing.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then at Derrick.
Then back at me.
And finally, he whispered:
“Jordan…”
His voice broke.
“This isn’t about who your father is.””
Everyone froze.
May you like
Marcus held the paper tighter.
“It’s about what happened the night you were born.””
