Chapter 9: The Secret Vanessa Buried
The next morning, nobody ate breakfast.
The kitchen was silent.
The kind of silent that happens after an earthquake.
Everything still stands.
But nothing feels stable anymore.
Marcus sat at the table with a cup of coffee he hadn’t touched.
Ava sat beside him.
She hadn’t looked at Vanessa once.
I understood why.
A mother was supposed to be the person you trusted first.
And now Ava didn’t know what was real.
I sat across from them.
Derrick was gone.
But his presence remained.
Like a stain nobody could wash away.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“We need answers.””
Vanessa stood near the counter.
She looked exhausted.
“I know.””
“No.””
My father looked at her.
“You don’t.””
She lowered her eyes.
“You think telling us the truth ends this.””
He shook his head.
“It starts it.””
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew he was right.
I looked at my mother.
“Why did you really give me the money?””
She looked at me.
“To protect you.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She closed her eyes.
“Derrick threatened me.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
My father went still.
“Months?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He found me.””
Ava looked up.
“You talked to him?””
“Yes.””
The disappointment on her face destroyed Vanessa.
“I was trying to keep him away.””
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“By yourself?””
She nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because I knew what you would do.””
“And what would I do?””
“You would fight him.””
Marcus stared.
“Yes.””
“And I was afraid you would lose.””
The room went quiet.
Because everyone knew my father.
He would run into a fire for us.
Sometimes without thinking.
I looked at the table.
“So why leave?””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“Because Derrick knew something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He knew about the hospital.””
Marcus frowned.
“The hospital?””
Vanessa nodded.
“The night Jordan was born.””
I felt that same cold feeling again.
“What about it?””
She sat down.
“When the records were changed…”
She stopped.
Marcus looked confused.
“Changed?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I didn’t do it alone.””
Nobody moved.
“Who helped you?””
She looked at the floor.
“I had someone.””
My father stood.
“Who?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“A nurse.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“It means the paperwork about Jordan’s birth was altered.””
My father’s face changed.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Because I was trying to hide something.””
The room became silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“What?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then Ava.
Then me.
“I wasn’t hiding who your father was.””
Everyone froze.
My father whispered:
“Then what were you hiding?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“I was hiding who I was afraid of.””
Ava grabbed Marcus’s hand.
My father stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
Like she expected someone to appear.
Then she said a name.
A name that none of us expected.
“Your mother.””
Marcus froze.
“My mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
And then she said the words that changed everything.
“She was the one who paid the nurse to change the records.””
The room went completely still.
Because suddenly the secret wasn’t just about us.
It was about a family betrayal that started before any of us were ready to hear it.
And Marcus realized something terrifying.

The person who had hidden the truth from him for eighteen years…
was someone he trusted before Vanessa ever entered his life.
