Chapter 7: The Paper That Changed Everything

My father had always been the strongest person I knew.

He was the man who carried heavy boxes without asking for help.

The man who fixed broken things instead of replacing them.

The man who told me fear was just a feeling that disappeared when you faced it.

But standing in our living room, holding that piece of paper, Marcus Carter looked like a man who had finally met something he couldn’t fight.

“Dad,” I said again.

This time my voice was quieter.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

For a second, I thought he would lie.

Not because he wanted to.

Because that was what parents did sometimes.

They tried to protect their children from pain.

But then he looked at Ava.

Then Vanessa.

Then Derrick.

And something inside him changed.

“No more secrets,” he whispered.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“No.””

One word.

But it carried eighteen years of questions.

“You don’t get to ask me for silence anymore.””

He unfolded the paper completely.

His hands were shaking.

I had never seen that before.

Not when my grandfather died.

Not when Dad lost his job years ago.

Not when he broke his leg and still went to work two days later.

Never.

“What is it?”” I asked.

My father looked down.

“It’s a medical report.””

The room went silent.

Derrick leaned against the doorframe.

His confidence disappeared.

Ava looked confused.

“Medical report for what?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Tell them.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Her silence hurt.

Again.

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Exactly.””

I looked between them.

“What happened the night I was born?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Jordan…”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

I wasn’t angry.

I was exhausted.

“I spent my entire life thinking everyone was protecting me.””

I looked at the paper in my father’s hand.

“But you were protecting yourselves.””

My mother started crying.

“You’re right.””

The admission shocked me.

She wiped her face.

“I was.””

Marcus looked away.

Vanessa continued.

“When you were born, the doctors noticed something was wrong.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You had a serious health condition.””

Ava grabbed my hand.

“But he’s fine.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He is now.””

Her voice broke.

“But back then, we didn’t know what would happen.””

I looked at my father.

“Dad knew?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

My mother looked down.

“I told him there were complications. I told him you needed extra care.””

“And?””

She swallowed.

“And Derrick found out.””

The name made the room colder.

I looked at the man standing near the door.

“Why?””

Derrick didn’t answer.

My father did.

“Because he was trying to use it against your mother.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You knew?””

“I knew he was dangerous.””

My father stared at Derrick.

“But I didn’t know how dangerous.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Careful, Marcus.””

My father turned.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

That was when I knew he was truly angry.

“You walked into my house after eighteen years and expected everyone to believe you were here to help?””

Derrick looked at me.

“I came here because Jordan deserved the truth.””

I laughed.

A bitter, empty laugh.

“Funny.””

Everyone looked at me.

“You all keep saying that.””

I pointed around the room.

“The truth.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody can actually tell me the truth.””

Derrick looked at me.

“Your mother lied because she was afraid.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t.””

“She was afraid I would take you.””

My father stepped closer.

“You were never his father.””

Derrick smiled slightly.

“Biologically, I was.””

The words landed.

But this time they didn’t break me.

Because I had learned something important.

Blood wasn’t everything.

The person who stayed mattered.

The person who showed up mattered.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

And somehow that hurt more.

“Dad?””

He looked back.

I saw the pain in his eyes.

“I’m still your father.””

The words were quiet.

But they were the only thing I needed.

Then Derrick spoke.

“And what about the other part?””

Everyone looked at him.

My mother went pale.

“What other part?””

Derrick reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another document.

“This.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered.

“Derrick, don’t.””

But he handed it to me.

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

His expression changed.

Almost like he regretted what he was about to reveal.

“Something your mother never wanted you to know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

“Jordan, please.””

My hand moved toward the paper.

Because after everything I had learned, I couldn’t stop.

I needed the answer.

I grabbed it.

And the first line made my entire body go cold.

May you like

Because it wasn’t about my father.

It was about my sister.
