Chapter 13: The Voice From The Grave

Nobody touched the phone.

The screen continued glowing.

*Eleanor Carter.*

My grandmother’s name.

A woman who had been buried for eight years.

A woman everyone believed was gone.

My father stared at the screen like it was impossible.

“That’s not possible.””

The nurse looked nervous.

“Answer it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“If you want the truth, answer it.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had lost all color.

“Why not?”” Marcus asked.

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father slowly pressed the button.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Marcus.””

My father stopped breathing.

Ava grabbed my hand.

The entire room froze.

“Mom?””

The voice on the phone sighed.

“I knew you would find out eventually.””

My father turned away from everyone.

“How?””

His voice shook.

“How are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I never wanted you to believe I abandoned you.””

Nobody moved.

My father’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re dead.””

“Yes.””

The answer was calm.

Too calm.

“But before I died, I made arrangements.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

My father heard her.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I knew she left something behind.””

Marcus looked like he had been betrayed all over again.

“You knew my mother could contact us?””

“I knew she wanted the truth revealed.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Of course you were.””

On the phone, Eleanor spoke again.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

My father tightened his grip.

“You don’t get to give me instructions anymore.””

“I know.””

The softness in her voice almost made it worse.

“I made mistakes.””

Nobody expected that.

My father stopped.

Because Eleanor Carter had never been a woman who admitted mistakes.

Not when she was alive.

Not ever.

“I thought I was protecting my family,” she continued.

Marcus looked at me.

Then Ava.

Then Vanessa.

“You all keep saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“But everyone who tried to protect us destroyed something.””

Silence.

Then Eleanor said:

“You’re right.””

My father closed his eyes.

The words affected him.

Because forgiveness was harder when the person was gone.

“What did you do?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“I changed the records.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“No,” Eleanor said.

The room went quiet.

“You know part of it.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor continued.

“I didn’t change the records because I hated Derrick.””

“Then why?””

“Because Derrick wasn’t the biggest danger.””

Everyone looked at each other.

My heart started pounding.

“Who was?””

A pause.

Then Eleanor answered:

“Your father.””

My father went completely still.

“My grandfather?””

I whispered the words.

Marcus looked at the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor’s voice became quieter.

“Your father built his entire life around control.””

The nurse looked down.

Like she had heard this before.

“He believed the Carter name mattered more than people.””

My father looked at the photograph.

The one with Derrick and the unknown person.

“My uncle.””

“Yes.””

Eleanor continued.

“But your uncle wasn’t acting alone.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Who else?””

Eleanor didn’t answer immediately.

That silence terrified me.

“Eleanor,” Marcus said.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology made everyone freeze.

“I’m sorry I left you with this.””

My father’s anger cracked.

Just slightly.

“You could have told me.””

“I thought I had time.””

“You didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice became emotional.

“I didn’t.””

Ava wiped her tears.

“Why are you calling now?””

The question surprised everyone.

Because Ava was asking the question none of us could.

Eleanor answered:

“Because Derrick was never supposed to find you.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why did he?””

“Because someone wanted him to.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Eleanor said:

“Vanessa.””

My mother stepped back.

“What?””

Marcus turned.

Vanessa looked horrified.

“No.””

Eleanor continued.

“She didn’t know she was being used.””

My father stared.

“Explain.””

“Vanessa contacted someone years ago.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never—”

“You did.””

The voice on the phone was firm.

“You asked for help.””

My mother started crying.

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I thought…”

She couldn’t finish.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I asked someone to make Derrick disappear.””

The room went silent.

My father stared.

“You hired someone?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

And then the hospital room door opened.

A police officer stood there.

Everyone turned.

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We need to speak with you.””

“About what?””

The officer glanced at Vanessa.

Then at the phone.

“We found evidence connected to the person who has been controlling this situation.””

My father looked confused.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

Then said:

“The person who arranged everything.””

Ava whispered:

“Who?””

The officer looked toward the hallway.

And a familiar voice answered.

“I think I can explain.””

Everyone turned.

Standing outside the room was someone we never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who should have been impossible.

Because she was supposed to be dead.
