Chapter 13: The Final Experiment

The moment Vanessa said those words, every instinct in my body changed.

I stopped thinking like a confused husband.

I stopped thinking like a man trying to understand impossible things.

I became a father.

And fathers protect their children.

I moved in front of Lily.

“No one is taking her.””

Dr. Cole watched me carefully.

Almost like he expected that answer.

“That reaction,” he said quietly.

“That’s exactly what we needed.””

I stared at him.

“You’re not getting near my daughter.””

He smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No,” he said.

“You understand fear. Not the truth.””

Behind him, footsteps echoed from the crawlspace entrance.

More people.

More strangers.

I tightened my fists.

Vanessa moved beside me.

For the first time all day, we were standing on the same side.

Dr. Cole noticed.

“How touching.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You used us.””

“No.””

His expression remained calm.

“I used the opportunity you gave me.””

“You told me Noah could be saved.””

“And he was.””

She looked at the three boys.

Her eyes filled with pain.

“Look what you did.””

Dr. Cole looked at them.

“I created three possibilities.””

“They’re children.””

“They’re outcomes.””

My anger exploded.

“Stop calling my son an outcome.””

The room went silent.

Even Dr. Cole looked different for a moment.

Because I think he forgot.

Behind all his theories.

Behind all his experiments.

Behind all his numbers.

There was a father standing in front of him.

A father who had spent years reading bedtime stories.

A father who had taught his son how to ride a bike.

A father who would tear apart the world before letting anyone hurt his child.

Dr. Cole stepped closer.

“Marcus, you need to understand something.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You need to understand something.””

I pointed toward the boys.

“These are not your experiments.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“She is not your research.””

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“And my family is not your property.””

For the first time, Dr. Cole looked annoyed.

Just for a second.

Then his expression returned.

“You think love makes you powerful.””

He smiled.

“It makes you predictable.””

A loud crash came from above.

The house shook.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Dad…”

I looked upward.

“What was that?””

Dr. Cole didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“They’re inside.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“The board.””

The people behind the experiment.

The ones who had been watching.

The ones who had let this happen.

The lights in the crawlspace flickered.

Then a voice came through a speaker.

“Dr. Cole, step away from the subjects.””

Subjects.

That word made me sick.

Dr. Cole looked irritated.

“You don’t give me orders.””

The voice responded:

“You failed to complete extraction.””

Extraction.

I looked at Lily.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“No.””

The speaker continued.

“Bring the girl upstairs.””

I moved immediately.

“No.””

Dr. Cole looked at me.

“Marcus.””

I ignored him.

The first two boys stepped forward.

The third Noah moved beside me.

All three looked at Lily.

“She’s scared,” one whispered.

“I know,” another said.

The third looked at me.

“Protect her.””

My throat tightened.

They were different.

But they were still my children.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happens if they take her?””

Her face went pale.

“She becomes the next version.””

My blood froze.

“The next what?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“The next experiment.””

A door upstairs slammed.

Then another.

They were coming.

I grabbed Lily’s hand.

“We’re leaving.””

Dr. Cole blocked the path.

“You can’t.””

I looked at him.

“Watch me.””

He shook his head.

“You still don’t understand why this house was chosen.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He smiled.

“Your family was never random.””

The room went quiet.

“You were selected.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

He looked at the three Noahs.

“Because Noah’s ability to retain memory was extraordinary.””

Then he looked at Lily.

“But she was even more unique.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Why?””

Dr. Cole answered:

“Because she remembered all versions.””

I looked at Lily.

She was crying.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Cole smiled.

“It means she was never supposed to be a participant.””

A pause.

“She was supposed to be the observer.””

The speaker crackled again.

“Time is over.””

The hidden door behind us began to close.

I grabbed the edge.

“No!””

The three Noahs rushed forward.

Together, they held it open.

I stared.

They were working together.

The same child.

Three pieces.

One family.

Dr. Cole watched them.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid.

Because he realized something.

Something he never expected.

May you like

They weren’t broken.

They were whole.
