Chapter 5: The Truth Vanessa Buried
I had never seen fear like that on Vanessa’s face.
Not the kind people show in movies.
Not a quick gasp or a startled reaction.
This was different.
This was recognition.
She knew that voice.
And whoever was beneath that floor knew her.
“Who is that?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Who is down there?””
Her eyes stayed locked on the opening.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No more secrets.””
The hidden door moved again.
A slow metallic scrape echoed through the living room.
Lily covered her ears.
“I don’t like this.””
I immediately moved beside her.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay.
My son was somewhere below us.
A stranger was speaking from beneath our house.
And my wife looked like she was facing a nightmare she had spent years trying to forget.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me.””
She swallowed.
“When we bought this house…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“When we bought this house, there was already a room underneath.””
I stared at her.
“You never told me?””
“I didn’t know at first.””
“Then how did you find it?””
She looked down.
“Because of Noah.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Six months ago, Noah told me he heard someone calling his name from underneath the floor.””
I looked toward the opening.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I checked.””
She wiped her face.
“I opened a small section behind the basement wall. I found the door.””
“And?””
“And I found the bracelet.””
I looked at the small blue bracelet around the hand I was still holding.
My son’s bracelet.
“But Noah was wearing it.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
The room felt colder.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Then explain it.””
She shook her head.
“I can’t.””
A sound came from below.
A weak voice.
“Dad…”
I immediately leaned closer.
“Noah!””
This time the voice was clear.
“Dad, don’t listen…”
The voice broke.
I reached down.
“Buddy, what are you trying to say?””
Static.
Not from a phone.
From somewhere beneath us.
A strange buzzing sound filled the crawlspace.
Then another voice.
The same one.
“Marcus.””
I pulled my hand back.
The voice continued.
“She never told you what happened here.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
The voice laughed softly.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Almost calmly.
Like it knew something we didn’t.
“Still protecting him?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is that?””
She whispered:
“I don’t know.””
But I could tell she was lying.
I had known her too long.
She was terrible at hiding fear.
The front door suddenly shook.
Everyone jumped.
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Lily screamed.
I moved between her and the door.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Shock.
“No.””
I turned.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“They found us.””
My hand moved toward the doorknob.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Don’t open it.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because whoever is outside…”
She swallowed.
“They’re not here to help.””
The knocking stopped.
Silence.
Then a piece of paper slid underneath the front door.
Slowly.
I walked toward it.
Vanessa whispered my name.
But I picked it up.
The paper was old.
Folded twice.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
Written in black ink.
*ASK YOUR WIFE WHY SHE LEFT HIM UNDER THE FLOOR.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was crying.
And Lily was staring at both of us.
“Mommy…”
Her voice trembled.
“Did you leave Noah down there?””
Vanessa collapsed onto the floor.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I tried to save him.””
May you like
Then the voice beneath the floor whispered:
“Ask her what she saved him from.””
