Chapter 14: The Son We Saved

The door was closing.

The three Noahs were holding it with everything they had.

Their faces were strained.

Their hands shaking.

But they didn’t let go.

“Marcus!”” Vanessa shouted.

I grabbed Lily and pulled her toward the opening.

One step.

Two steps.

Then Dr. Cole moved.

He reached for Lily.

I reacted before I thought.

I pushed him back.

He stumbled into the wall.

“You don’t get to touch her.””

His calm expression finally disappeared.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I’m ending one.””

The house above us shook again.

The voices outside grew louder.

They were searching.

They knew where we were.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What now?””

She stared at the control panel beside the hidden door.

A panel I hadn’t noticed before.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“This controls the entire system.””

“Can you shut it down?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

“But?””

She looked at the boys.

“If I do…”

She swallowed.

“They might lose their memories.””

The words hit hard.

The boys heard.

The first Noah looked at me.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“If we forget…”

His voice cracked.

“Will you still know us?””

My heart broke.

I walked toward him.

I touched his face.

“I knew you before I understood you.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I knew your laugh.””

I looked at the second.

“I knew your courage.””

Then the third.

“I knew your heart.””

I looked at all three.

“Nothing can erase that.””

The three boys looked at each other.

And slowly…

They smiled.

The same smile.

The same Noah.

Vanessa moved toward the panel.

Dr. Cole tried to stand.

“You have no idea what you’re destroying.””

She looked at him.

“For once…”

Her voice was calm.

“I know exactly what I’m destroying.””

She entered a code.

Nothing happened.

She tried again.

The screen flashed red.

“Access denied.””

Dr. Cole smiled.

“You can’t undo years of work.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I’m not undoing it.””

She pressed another button.

“I’m freeing them.””

The lights went out.

Completely.

For a few seconds, there was only darkness.

Then the entire house came alive.

Alarms.

Flashing signals.

Doors unlocking.

The people above started shouting.

The system was failing.

The three Noahs suddenly grabbed their heads.

I rushed forward.

“Noah!””

All three fell to their knees.

Lily screamed.

“Dad!””

I grabbed them.

“Stay with me.””

The first one looked up.

“I remember…”

The second whispered:

“I remember everything.””

The third closed his eyes.

“Even the pain.””

I held them all.

And then something impossible happened.

The three boys reached for each other.

Their hands touched.

A bright flash filled the room.

Not like an explosion.

Like a memory.

A lifetime of memories.

Their memories.

Their fears.

Their happiness.

Their love.

Everything became one.

When the light faded…

There was only one boy sitting on the floor.

My son.

Noah.

He looked up at me.

His face was wet with tears.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Then he smiled.

A smile I knew.

A smile I had missed.

I pulled him into my arms.

And I cried.

Not because I was weak.

Because I had spent hours believing I might never hold my son again.

Vanessa collapsed beside us.

“Noah.””

He looked at her.

For a moment, nobody knew what would happen.

Then Noah hugged her.

She broke down completely.

“I’m sorry.””

He held her tighter.

“I know.””

I looked around.

Dr. Cole was gone.

The hidden room was empty.

The experiment was over.

But something still bothered me.

As I held Noah, I noticed Lily standing near the wall.

She wasn’t crying.

She was staring at something.

“What is it?””

She pointed.

A small screen hidden behind the panel was still glowing.

On it was one final message.

A message that wasn’t from Dr. Cole.

It wasn’t from the company.

It was from Noah.

But the timestamp was from tomorrow.

May you like

The message said:

*Dad, if you are reading this… we failed.*
