Chapter 15: The Truth We Choose

I stared at the screen.

The words didn’t make sense.

My son was standing beside me.

Alive.

Real.

Holding my hand.

But there was a message.

From him.

From the future.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because the next line appeared.

*You need to leave before they come back.*

The room went silent.

Noah looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Dad…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He touched the screen.

“I remember this.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

He looked confused.

“I remember writing it.””

Nobody spoke.

Lily stepped closer.

“But you didn’t.””

Noah shook his head.

“I did.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Marcus.””

I knew that look.

The one that meant she had realized something before I did.

“What?””

She stared at Noah.

“The memories didn’t just combine.””

A chill moved through me.

“What else happened?””

She looked at the screen.

“They merged.””

The message disappeared.

A new one appeared.

*They will tell you the experiment ended. It didn’t.*

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Noah looked at me.

“Dad…”

I knelt in front of him.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

But he looked afraid.

“I remember things that haven’t happened.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

I pulled him close.

“We’ll figure it out.””

A sound came from upstairs.

The front door opening.

Everyone froze.

The company.

They had returned.

Vanessa looked at me.

“We have to go.””

I nodded.

This time, nobody argued.

We climbed out of the hidden room.

The living room looked completely different.

The broken floor.

The scattered wood.

The place where everything had changed.

But outside the window, the world was still normal.

Cars passed.

Neighbors walked their dogs.

People lived ordinary lives.

Nobody knew what had happened beneath our house.

Nobody knew what my family survived.

We moved quickly.

I grabbed my keys.

Then Noah stopped.

“Dad.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked toward the floor.

For a second, I saw fear in his eyes.

“There’s something else.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He whispered:

“The room wasn’t built to bring me back.””

I waited.

“It was built to bring someone else through.””

Vanessa went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I thought we destroyed it.””

The lights flickered.

Just once.

Then the hidden floor beneath us made a sound.

A knock.

One.

Two.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Noah grabbed my hand.

“Dad.””

I looked down.

He was shaking.

“What?””

He whispered:

“That’s the first version.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“The one before me.””

The house went silent.

Then a voice came from beneath the floor.

A child’s voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

“Dad?””

My body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it better than anything.

It was Noah.

But Noah was standing beside me.

The voice beneath the floor spoke again.

“I’m still here.””

I looked at my son.

He looked back at me.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I didn’t know if the thing beneath the floor was a threat.

Or another child who needed saving.

I took Noah’s hand.

I looked at Vanessa.

I looked at Lily.

Then I looked at the broken floor.

Because one truth remained.

A family can survive secrets.

A family can survive fear.

A family can survive impossible things.

But a family cannot survive leaving someone behind.

I stepped toward the floor.

And knocked back.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The voice beneath us whispered:

“Thank you, Dad.””

May you like

And somewhere deep under the house…

Something knocked back.
