Chapter 4: The Door Beneath the Floor
The voice disappeared.
But the words stayed.
*Don’t trust her.*
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not Lily.
Even the house seemed frozen, as if the walls themselves were waiting to see what I would do next.
My hand was still wrapped around the edge of the broken floorboard.
My son was somewhere beneath me.
And my wife was standing above me with tears in her eyes, holding onto a secret that had been buried under our home.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.
I looked at her.
“Was that Noah?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned back toward the opening.
“Noah!””
A faint sound came from below.
“Dad…”
Relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.
“I’m here, buddy. I’m right here.””
I looked at the hidden metal door beneath the floor.
The one Vanessa said she had seen before.
The one that shouldn’t exist.
I reached down.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Marcus, wait.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
“Please.””
I stared at her.
“For years, I trusted every word you said.””
Her face fell.
“And now my son is trapped under our house, and you’re asking me to wait?””
She looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That answer made something inside me break.
I turned the flashlight toward the metal door.
It was old.
Rust covered the edges.
But the lock was new.
Someone had replaced it recently.
I ran my fingers along the metal.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“Who installed this?””
Silence.
“Who?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“I did.””
The room went quiet again.
Lily looked at her mother.
“You did?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Not like you think.””
I stood up slowly.
“You put a locked door underneath our living room floor?””
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“Everyone has a choice.””
She shook her head.
“No. Not when you’re trying to keep your children safe.””
I almost laughed.
“Safe?””
I pointed at the hole.
“Noah is trapped under our house.””
Her eyes closed.
“I know.””
The words hit me.
I stared at her.
“You know?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
She realized what she had said.
Too late.
Lily stepped backward.
“Mommy…”
Vanessa immediately reached for her.
“Lily, listen to me.””
But Lily moved away.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You knew Noah was there?””
Vanessa looked destroyed.
“I knew something was there.””
I felt my anger disappear.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I was scared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the opening.
“Before today, I thought the room was empty.””
“The room?””
She nodded.
“There’s another space behind that door.””
I looked down.
A hidden room.
Under our house.
“How long have you known?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“Six months.””
My stomach dropped.
Six months.
She had known for six months.
And she never told me.
I stepped away from her.
“You let us sleep above this?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“When I knew the truth.””
A loud knock came from beneath the metal door.
All three of us froze.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Dad…”
Another knock.
This time stronger.
Vanessa whispered:
“It’s not Noah.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face turned pale.
“Marcus…”
The metal door moved.
Slowly.
Something on the other side pushed upward.
And then a voice came from beneath the floor.
A voice that was not my son’s.
“Vanessa.””
My wife stopped breathing.
May you like
The voice continued.
“You promised you would never come back.””
