Chapter 3: The Room Nobody Knew Existed
The police were the logical answer.
That was what I kept telling myself.
Call the police.
Get help.
Do what any father would do.
But my finger hovered over the screen.
Because there was one question I couldn’t ignore.
Why was Vanessa afraid?
I looked at my wife across the living room.
The woman I had known for twelve years.
The woman who held my hand through my father’s funeral.
The woman who cried when Noah was born.
The woman who now looked at a hole beneath our house like it was a grave.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her lips trembled.
“I’m trying to protect him.””
My chest tightened.
“Protect who?””
She looked toward the floor.
“Both of you.””
Lily stepped forward.
“You’re talking like Noah did something wrong.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why are you acting scared?””
Vanessa had no answer.
I grabbed my phone again.
“I’m calling for help.””
Her expression changed.
“No.””
The way she said it stopped me.
Not because it was loud.
Because it sounded desperate.
“Marcus, please.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She walked closer.
“Because if they come before we understand what happened…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know what will happen.””
I felt a chill.
“You don’t know?””
Before she could answer, a sound came from beneath the floor.
A cough.
A small, weak cough.
Lily immediately dropped beside the opening.
“Noah!””
I moved back down.
“Buddy, can you hear me?””
A tiny voice answered.
“Dad…”
My eyes burned.
“I’m here.””
“Dad…”
His voice shook.
“Don’t let Mommy…”
The words cut off.
“Noah?””
Silence.
“NOAH!””
I reached deeper.
“Talk to me!””
Nothing.
Then Vanessa grabbed my shoulder.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
Her face was full of fear.
“What did he say?””
I stared at her.
“You heard him.””
She looked like she already knew.
That terrified me.
I pulled the flashlight closer and looked beneath the floor again.
This time, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.
A small metal door hidden behind the wooden supports.
A door.
Under our house.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“What is that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus…”
My voice became colder.
“What is under our house?””
She whispered:
“Something I thought was gone.””
The room felt smaller.
The bright lights above us suddenly seemed too bright.
The clean white rug.
The polished wooden floor.
The perfect family home.
All of it felt fake.
I reached toward the hidden door.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because that’s where I found Noah’s bracelet.””
I froze.
Lily stopped crying.
“What?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
And in that moment, I realized something impossible.
The bracelet on Noah’s wrist…
Had already been under the floor before he disappeared.
Then the hidden metal door suddenly moved.
From underneath.
Someone pushed it.
May you like
And a voice whispered from the darkness:
“Marcus… don’t trust her.””
