Chapter 6: The Child Who Remembered
I didn’t know who to believe anymore.
That was the worst part.
Not the hidden room.
Not the voice.
Not even the impossible bracelet.
It was looking at the two people I loved most and realizing one of them was hiding something that could destroy our family.
I walked back toward the opening.
“Noah.””
A weak response came.
“Dad…”
“I’m getting you out.””
A pause.
Then:
“Dad, hurry.””
My heart broke.
I grabbed the flashlight again.
“I’m going down.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You’re not stopping me.””
“Marcus, please listen.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the floor.
“Our son is down there.””
Her expression changed.
“He’s not alone.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I stared at her.
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Lily.
“Not in front of her.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I’m tired of people keeping secrets.””
Her small voice filled the room.
“I’m Noah’s sister.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Lily wiped her tears.
“If something happened to him, I deserve to know.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was seven years old.
But in that moment, she looked older.
Like this house had taken away something she should have been allowed to keep.
Vanessa slowly nodded.
“Okay.””
She sat on the floor.
“When Noah first heard the voice, he wasn’t scared.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said the voice sounded like someone who needed help.””
The hidden door creaked.
Everyone looked down.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me someone underneath the house was calling him.””
“Why didn’t you believe him?””
“Because I thought it was impossible.””
She looked at the floor.
“Until I heard it too.””
A chill moved through me.
“You heard it?””
She nodded.
“One night.””
Her voice became quieter.
“I followed the sound.””
“And found the door.””
“Yes.””
She looked at the opening.
“But when I opened it…”
She stopped.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I saw Noah.””
My entire body went cold.
“What do you mean you saw Noah?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I saw him standing inside the room.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Where was our son?””
She looked directly at me.
“Upstairs asleep.””
Nobody spoke.
The air felt impossible to breathe.
Lily whispered:
“There were two Noahs?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Then the hand I was holding moved.
Small fingers tightened around mine.
“No.””
A weak voice came from below.
“There wasn’t two of me.””
I looked down.
“Noah?””
His voice trembled.
“Dad…”
“I’m here.””
A pause.
Then:
“Mom found the other one first.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Noah…”
The voice beneath the floor continued.
“She knew.””
I stared at my wife.
“What did he mean?””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked toward the dark opening.
And whispered:
“The thing wearing my son’s face.””
The lights above us flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the room went dark for a second.
When the lights came back on…
The hidden metal door beneath the floor was open.
And from the darkness below, Noah’s voice whispered:
“Dad…”
May you like
A pause.
“Which one of us did you pull up?””
