Chapter 10: The Night My Father Disappeared
Maya read the sentence again.
Then again.
The words refused to make sense.
*BEFORE YOU TRUST YOUR FATHER, ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE LEFT YOU.*
Her eyes lifted slowly.
Everyone was watching Daniel.
Not Marcus.
Not Robert.
Daniel.
The man who had returned claiming he was the father she never got to know.
The man who looked at her with the same eyes.
The man who had told her he spent years trying to come back.
Now there was a question hanging over him.
A question nobody wanted to answer.
Maya folded the paper.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t move.
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Her voice was tired now.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just exhausted.
“I am done finding out pieces of my own life from strangers.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
“Then tell me the right way.””
The silence stretched.
Marcus watched him carefully.
Robert watched him too.
And Maya realized something.
For all their fighting, all their accusations, all their anger…
They were afraid of the same moment.
Daniel finally stepped forward.
“The night I left…”
He stopped.
Maya waited.
Daniel took a breath.
“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””
She looked at the note.
“Then why does someone think you did?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Because they don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me the whole story.””
The auditorium seemed frozen.
Daniel looked toward the empty seats.
Like he was seeing a memory.
“I was supposed to meet your mother that night.””
Maya listened carefully.
“She had found something. Something that changed everything.””
“What?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never found out.””
Maya frowned.
“You met her?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Then I saw Marcus.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
He didn’t deny it.
Maya’s heart sank.
“You were there?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because your mother called me.””
Daniel immediately looked at him.
“She called you after she called me.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Maya looked between them.
“You both knew she was leaving?””
“No,” Marcus said.
“Yes,” Daniel said at the same time.
The contradiction hit the room instantly.
Maya stared.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You knew.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I knew she was scared.””
“You knew she planned to disappear.””
“I knew she wanted to protect Maya.””
Maya stepped back.
“Protect me from what?””
Neither man answered.
She looked at Robert.
“You know.””
Robert sighed.
“Yes.””
“Then say it.””
Robert looked uncomfortable for the first time.
“Your mother discovered that Daniel had been investigating Marcus.””
Maya looked at Daniel.
“Investigating him?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother was worried.””
“About Marcus?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked away.
Maya’s chest tightened.
“But why?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Because Marcus had access to your family records.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
Daniel paused.
“It doesn’t.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Because the truth is, I found out Marcus had changed more than just your last name.””
Maya felt cold.
“What else?””
Marcus finally spoke.
“Maya, please.””
She turned.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
That sentence broke something in Marcus’s expression.
Maya continued.
“What did you change?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
Daniel answered.
“Your mother’s medical records.””
Maya froze.
“What?””
“She had a condition.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother discovered someone had altered documents connected to her pregnancy.””
Maya’s hand moved to her mouth.
“My pregnancy?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before you were born.””
The room became silent.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Did you change something about me before I was even born?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“No, Maya.””
“Then what did you do?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Then at her.
“I changed documents because I thought it would keep people from finding you.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Robert quietly said:
“The people who wanted your mother silent.””
Maya turned.
“People?””
Robert nodded.
“This was never just about one man.””
The words made the room feel even colder.
Maya looked down at the photograph.
Her mother.
Marcus.
Daniel.
All connected.
All hiding.
She looked at Daniel.
“So what happened that night?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I met your mother.””
“And?””
“She gave me something.””
“What?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He pulled out a small necklace.
Maya recognized it instantly.
Her mother wore it every day.
A small silver pendant.
“My mother’s.””
Daniel nodded.
“She gave it to me that night.””
Maya stared.
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Because she knew she might not get another chance to tell you.””
Maya felt tears forming.
“What did she say?””
Daniel looked at her.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let them rewrite her story.’”
Maya closed her eyes.
A painful silence followed.
Then Marcus whispered:
“She wasn’t supposed to leave.””
Maya opened her eyes.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked terrified.
Before he could answer, the auditorium doors opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Carrying a worn handbag.
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered her name.
“Renee.””
Maya’s breath caught.
The woman stepped inside.
The missing person from the photograph.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
Maya stared.
“Aunt Renee?””
Renee looked at her.
May you like
And the first words she spoke were:
“Maya, your mother was never the one who disappeared.””
