Chapter 13: The Video My Mother Left Behind

The auditorium disappeared.

Not literally.

The walls were still there.

The graduation banners still hung above the stage.

The crowd was still watching.

But for Maya, everything else faded.

There was only one thing that mattered.

The voice coming from the screen.

Her mother.

A woman she had spent years remembering through photographs, old clothes, and fragments of childhood memories.

A woman she thought had chosen to leave.

Now she was speaking directly to her.

“If Maya is watching this…”

The recording paused briefly.

The image shook slightly, like whoever filmed it had been afraid of being discovered.

Maya held her breath.

Her mother appeared younger.

Tired.

But determined.

She sat in a small room Maya had never seen before.

There was a stack of papers beside her.

The same kind of papers that had destroyed every lie Maya believed.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

“Then they failed to keep the truth from her.””

Maya felt tears running down her face.

Not because she was sad.

Because she was finally hearing the words she had waited her whole life to hear.

Her mother continued.

“Your father did not abandon you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

His shoulders dropped.

Like hearing those words was something he had waited twenty-two years for.

Maya looked at him.

For the first time, she saw something beyond the mystery.

A father who had lost his daughter.

A man who had carried that loss every day.

The video continued.

“But the person who took him away is standing in that room with you.””

The screen went dark for one second.

Then the recording continued.

Her mother’s voice became quieter.

“Maya, I need you to understand something. The people around you may tell you they did what they did because they loved you.””

Everyone on stage became still.

“They may tell you they were protecting you.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

He looked like he already knew what was coming.

“But protection without truth becomes a prison.””

The words hit him.

Marcus looked down.

Maya turned back to the screen.

Her mother continued.

“I trusted Marcus.””

A wave of confusion moved through the audience.

Maya looked at him.

“He was my friend. He cared about you. He cared about our family.””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“But after Daniel disappeared, Marcus changed.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Maya noticed.

There was no anger anymore.

Only sadness.

Her mother continued.

“He believed he was saving you.””

A pause.

“But he stopped listening to anyone who told him he was wrong.””

Maya’s heart tightened.

She looked at Marcus.

He didn’t defend himself.

The video continued.

“Marcus, if you are watching this…”

Everyone froze.

Her mother was speaking directly to him.

“You need to know something.””

The recording crackled.

“I never hated you.””

Marcus covered his mouth.

Maya saw his shoulders shake.

“I was afraid because I saw you losing yourself.””

A tear fell down his face.

“But I also knew you loved Maya.””

Maya felt something break inside her.

Because the truth was becoming harder than any lie.

Marcus wasn’t a monster.

He wasn’t innocent either.

He was a person who made a terrible choice.

The video continued.

“Daniel, if Maya finds this, I hope you know I tried.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face collapsed.

“I tried to keep our family together.””

The recording became quieter.

“But you and Marcus were both so focused on winning that you forgot the person who mattered most.””

Maya wiped her tears.

Me.

Her mother was talking about her.

The video paused.

Then a final message appeared.

*FINAL RECORDING.*

The room became tense.

Her mother appeared again.

This time, she looked frightened.

“Maya.””

Her voice shook.

“If you are seeing this, there is one more thing you need to know.””

She looked away from the camera.

Like she was checking if someone was nearby.

“The night Daniel disappeared…”

Maya leaned closer.

“That night was not an accident.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Marcus looked terrified.

Her mother continued.

“Someone wanted Daniel gone.””

The screen flickered.

“And someone wanted me silent.””

Maya’s heart raced.

The recording cut for several seconds.

When it returned, her mother was crying.

“Maya, I need you to find the original records.””

Robert immediately looked at Marcus.

Marcus noticed.

“The records will show you what really happened.””

The video ended.

The auditorium stayed silent.

No applause.

No whispers.

Nothing.

Then Maya slowly turned around.

Everyone was looking at her.

She looked at Marcus.

“Original records.””

He didn’t answer.

“Where are they?””

Marcus looked defeated.

“I don’t know.””

Robert suddenly spoke.

“That’s not true.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at him.

Robert stepped forward.

“You know exactly where they are.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Maya noticed.

“You do.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

After a long moment, he nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya’s voice was quiet.

“Where?””

Marcus looked toward the stage floor.

“Under the old family house.””

Maya froze.

“The house where I grew up?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you hide them there?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because I thought nobody would ever find them.””

Maya stared.

Then she asked the question that made Marcus look away.

“Who were you hiding them from?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

And that silence told Maya something.

May you like

The truth was not finished.

Not even close.
