Chapter 12: The Choice My Mother Made
Maya stared at the document.
The words blurred.
She blinked.
Read them again.
*Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*
A legal document.
A decision.
A plan.
Something her mother had created before she disappeared.
She looked at Renee.
“What does this mean?””
Renee sat down in the nearest chair.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“It means your mother knew something was coming.””
Maya’s fingers tightened.
“Coming from who?””
Renee looked toward Marcus.
Nobody spoke.
Maya turned.
“Marcus?””
He looked away.
That was becoming his answer.
She walked closer.
“I need you to stop making me guess.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I didn’t want to lose you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He swallowed.
“I knew your mother was planning to leave.””
Maya froze.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you let her?””
Marcus looked broken.
“She wanted to take you.””
“She was my mother.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Marcus’s voice cracked.
“Because I believed she was putting you in danger.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because he didn’t trust her.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because I knew what you were hiding.””
Maya looked between them.
“What was Daniel hiding?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
Another secret.
Maya closed her eyes.
She almost laughed.
A painful, exhausted laugh.
“You know what’s funny?””
Everyone looked at her.
“I spent years thinking my family was broken because my father left.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Then I found out he didn’t.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Then I found out you lied.””
She looked at Renee.
“Then I found out everyone knew.””
Her voice cracked.
“And somehow I’m still the last person to know my own life.””
Renee’s eyes filled with tears.
“You’re right.””
Maya looked at the document again.
“What did my mother want?””
Renee answered softly.
“She wanted custody transferred to Marcus temporarily.””
Maya looked confused.
“What?””
Marcus looked up.
Renee continued.
“Your mother wanted Marcus to protect you if something happened.””
Maya stared.
“So she trusted him?””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
“Then why did she fear him?””
Renee looked down.
“Because she trusted him with you.””
The words were confusing.
Maya waited.
“And she was afraid of what he would become if he lost control.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Renee continued.
“Your mother believed Marcus loved you.””
A pause.
“But she also believed love could become dangerous when mixed with fear.””
Maya looked at Marcus.
He didn’t argue.
That hurt.
“Where is my mother?””
Nobody spoke.
The question had been waiting all day.
Maybe all her life.
Finally.
Daniel answered.
“We don’t know.””
Maya turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“She disappeared after that night.””
“But everyone said she left.””
Renee shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“She never left.””
A cold silence spread.
Maya felt her heartbeat increase.
“What are you saying?””
Renee looked at Marcus.
Then Daniel.
Then Maya.
“I’m saying your mother was trying to come back to you.””
Maya whispered:
“Then why didn’t she?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Or because nobody wanted to.
Renee opened the folder again.
“There’s one more page.””
Maya looked.
Another letter.
This one was dated after the guardianship agreement.
After the night everyone talked about.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
The handwriting was her mother’s.
*Maya, if you are old enough to read this, then I need you to understand one thing.*
She swallowed.
Everyone watched her.
*I did not leave you.*
Maya covered her mouth.
Tears fell.
The next line was harder.
*Someone made sure I could not return.*
Maya looked up.
Slowly.
Her eyes moved from Marcus.
To Daniel.
To Renee.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the auditorium screen behind them suddenly flickered.
The university logo disappeared.
A video file appeared.
Everyone turned.
The screen showed a timestamp.
Twenty-two years earlier.
And a woman’s voice filled the auditorium.
A voice Maya had not heard since she was four years old.
Her mother’s voice.
“If Maya is watching this…”
The entire room froze.
“…then they failed to keep the truth from her.””
Maya stared at the screen.
Because her mother’s next words were not meant for Marcus.
Not for Daniel.
Not for Renee.
They were meant only for her.
“Your father did not abandon you.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“But the person who took him away is standing in that room with you.””
