Chapter 9: The Person Everyone Forgot
Maya held the photograph.
At first, she didn’t understand what she was seeing.
Her mind refused to accept it.
The image was old.
The colors were faded.
But the faces were clear.
Her mother.
Marcus.
And someone else.
Someone she recognized.
Someone impossible.
Maya’s fingers went cold.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya…”
“No.””
She stepped back.
The photograph shook in her hand.
Because standing beside her mother was a woman Maya had not seen in years.
A woman everyone told her was gone.
Her aunt.
The person who raised her mother.
The person who disappeared from every family conversation.
The person nobody mentioned.
“Why is Aunt Renee in this?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Robert looked away.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Maya felt her anger return.
“Why does everyone keep doing that?””
Nobody answered.
“Why does every question lead to another secret?””
She looked at Marcus.
“You knew.””
Marcus whispered, “Yes.””
“Who is she?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“Someone who knew the truth.””
“About what?””
Silence.
Maya walked closer.
“About my birth?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“About my mother?””
Still nothing.
She looked at Daniel.
“You knew her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya stared.
“Of course you did.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone knew everyone except me.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“Maya.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I spent years thinking I had no family.””
Her eyes moved between them.
“And all of you were standing around with pieces of my life.””
Robert finally spoke.
“Renee was the one person your mother trusted.””
Maya turned.
“Then where is she?””
No answer.
That silence felt familiar.
Another person who disappeared.
Another person whose absence came with no explanation.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Did you hurt her?””
Marcus looked shocked.
“No.””
“Then why is everyone afraid to say what happened?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Robert.
Nobody wanted to speak.
Finally, Robert stepped forward.
“Because the truth is that your mother was not running away.””
Maya listened.
“She was trying to expose what happened to your family.””
“What happened?””
Robert looked at Marcus.
Then Daniel.
Then Maya.
“Your mother discovered that Marcus and Daniel were connected to the same secret.””
Maya frowned.
“What secret?””
Robert reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
Everyone watched.
Maya stared.
“What is that?””
“Something your mother left behind.””
“Where?””
Robert looked toward the auditorium exit.
“Somewhere Marcus never wanted found.””
Marcus immediately reacted.
“No.””
The word came out with fear.
Real fear.
Maya noticed.
“What is it?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Maya, please.””
She froze.
Because Marcus had never said please before.
Not like that.
Not with desperation.
She held the photograph tighter.
“Where is it?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I mean it.””
“Then prove it.””
The stage went silent.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
For several seconds, the two men exchanged a look filled with years of anger and regret.
Then Marcus slowly reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small metal key.
Maya stared.
Another key.
Another hidden thing.
“You had one?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your mother gave it to me.””
Maya frowned.
“Why would she give you something she was hiding?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because she still trusted me.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“That’s not what happened.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She gave it to you because she thought you would finally do the right thing.””
Maya looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“It means your mother knew Marcus had a choice.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Maya felt a chill.
“What choice?””
Nobody answered.
Then the auditorium lights flickered.
A security guard rushed toward the stage.
“Mister Reynolds.””
Everyone turned.
The guard held a small envelope.
“We found this near the backstage entrance.””
Marcus stared at it.
The guard looked confused.
“It has Maya’s name on it.””
Maya slowly walked forward.
Her heart pounding.
She took the envelope.
The handwriting made her stop.
Because it wasn’t her mother’s.
It wasn’t Marcus’s.
It wasn’t Daniel’s.
It was written by someone who had been watching her life from the shadows.
She opened it.
May you like
Inside was one sentence.
*MAYA, BEFORE YOU TRUST YOUR FATHER, ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE LEFT YOU.*
