Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Nobody moved.

The woman standing at the entrance looked older than Maya remembered.

But there was no mistaking her.

The same warm eyes from childhood photographs.

The same smile her mother used to have.

Renee Carter.

The woman everyone said left.

The woman everyone stopped mentioning.

Maya felt like she was looking at a ghost.

“Where have you been?””

Her voice barely came out.

Renee’s expression broke.

“Trying to survive.””

The answer confused Maya.

“Survive what?””

Renee walked slowly toward the stage.

Her eyes moved from Marcus to Daniel.

Then back to Maya.

“I should have come sooner.””

Maya laughed sadly.

“Everyone says that.””

Renee stopped.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised Maya.

Renee looked at the audience.

At the cameras.

At the graduation decorations still hanging around them.

“This was never how I wanted you to learn.””

Maya held the letter tightly.

“Nothing about today was how I wanted to learn.””

Renee nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Renee, you shouldn’t be here.””

She looked at him.

“Neither should you have been kept away.””

Daniel looked down.

Maya noticed.

Everyone had a history.

Everyone had wounds.

But she was tired of being the only person without answers.

“Start from the beginning.””

Renee looked at her.

“The beginning?””

“Yes.””

Maya’s voice became firmer.

“My beginning.””

Renee took a breath.

“When you were born, your mother and Daniel were happy.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

He looked emotional.

“She loved you both.””

Renee continued.

“But after you were born, things changed.””

Marcus looked away.

Maya noticed.

“Because of him?””

Renee didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Marcus whispered:

“Renee.””

She looked at him.

“You promised her.””

His face changed.

Maya turned.

“What promise?””

Renee looked at Marcus.

“You promised you would never lie to Maya.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I thought I was doing the right thing.””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“You always say that.””

Maya stepped forward.

“What did he do?””

Renee looked at her.

“Marcus became obsessed with protecting you.””

“That sounds like something good.””

“It started that way.””

Maya listened.

“Then what happened?””

Renee looked at Daniel.

“Daniel discovered Marcus had been keeping information from your mother.””

“What information?””

“About your father.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

Renee continued.

“Marcus knew Daniel was alive.””

The words still hurt.

Even after everything.

Maya looked at Marcus.

“How?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Renee did.

“Because Marcus helped create the situation that separated them.””

The auditorium reacted.

Maya felt dizzy.

“Create?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Renee.””

“No.””

Renee looked at him.

“She deserves the truth.””

Daniel went quiet.

Maya looked between them.

“What did Marcus do?””

Renee’s eyes filled.

“He made a choice.””

“What choice?””

Renee looked at Marcus.

“A choice that removed Daniel from your life.””

Marcus’s face broke.

“I was afraid.””

Renee shook her head.

“You were angry.””

Silence.

Maya stared.

“Angry about what?””

Marcus looked at her.

For the first time, she saw the pain behind everything.

Not an excuse.

Pain.

“I thought Daniel was going to take you away.””

Maya frowned.

“Why would he?””

“Because he was your father.””

The answer was simple.

And devastating.

Marcus whispered:

“I loved you.””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“More than anything.””

“I know.””

“But I was terrified that one day you would look at me and realize I wasn’t your real father.””

The words hurt because they sounded human.

Not evil.

Not simple.

Human.

Maya looked down.

“But you made me lose him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel looked away.

Renee stepped closer.

“And that wasn’t the only thing Marcus hid.””

Maya looked up.

“What else?””

Renee reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small folder.

Inside was a document.

She handed it to Maya.

“This is the last thing your mother left.””

Maya opened it.

The first page contained a statement.

A legal document.

Signed by her mother.

Her eyes scanned the words.

Then she stopped.

Because at the bottom was a name.

A name she knew.

Marcus Reynolds.

Maya looked up.

“What is this?””

Renee’s voice was barely a whisper.

“The document your mother created before she disappeared.””

Maya looked back down.

May you like

And the title at the top made her heart stop.
