Chapter 8: The Girl Who Had Two Names

The old birth certificate felt heavier than the paper should have.

Maya held it carefully.

Like it might disappear if she touched it too hard.

The auditorium lights reflected against the plastic cover.

Her name was printed clearly.

But it wasn’t the name she knew.

Not Maya Carter.

Another name.

A name her mother had chosen.

A name Marcus had erased.

Maya stared.

“What is this?””

Nobody moved.

She looked at Daniel.

“Why does this exist?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because it’s who you were before everything changed.””

Maya looked back at the document.

Her birth date.

Her mother’s name.

Her father’s name.

Everything matched.

Except the last name.

She looked at Marcus.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Why did you change it?””

Marcus slowly walked toward her.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Maya raised her hand.

“Stop.””

Both men stopped.

She looked at Marcus.

“I need to hear it from you.””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“When your mother found out I changed the records, she wanted to take you away.””

Maya waited.

“But why?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because she thought I was stealing you.””

“Were you?””

His silence was painful.

“Maya…”

“Were you?””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to give you a stable life.””

“That wasn’t the question.””

He looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The answer hit harder than she expected.

A wave of emotion moved through the room.

Maya stepped backward.

“You stole my name.””

Marcus whispered, “I gave you mine.””

“You erased hers.””

He couldn’t argue.

Because he had.

Daniel looked away.

Maya noticed.

“You’re not innocent either.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised her.

“You knew Marcus changed everything.””

“I suspected.””

“And you did nothing?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I tried.””

“When?””

Daniel looked toward the exit.

“After I was gone.””

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

Robert answered.

“It means Daniel spent years trying to find a way back.””

Maya looked at him.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Robert looked at Marcus.

Because the answer was there.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Maya, you need to understand—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t need another explanation that makes everything sound reasonable.””

She held the birth certificate.

“I need the truth.””

Marcus looked defeated.

“The truth is your mother was going to expose me.””

“And?””

“She knew things that could ruin my life.””

Maya stared.

“So you stopped her?””

Marcus’s face changed.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Almost desperately.

“No, Maya.””

“Then what happened?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“She vanished.””

Maya looked at him.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She left.””

“When?””

“Two days after she wrote that letter.””

Maya’s eyes widened.

Two days.

A memory surfaced.

She was four years old.

She remembered a suitcase near the front door.

She remembered her mother crying.

She remembered Marcus telling her that Mommy needed to go away for a while.

She had forgotten.

Or maybe she had been forced to forget.

Maya looked at Marcus.

“You told me she abandoned us.””

Marcus’s face fell.

“I thought she was gone.””

“You thought?””

He looked away.

Maya stepped closer.

“What did you do after she left?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“He looked for her.””

Maya turned.

“He did?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer confused her.

“You’re defending him?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“I’m saying the truth is more complicated than either of us want.””

Robert stepped forward.

“There’s one more thing.””

Maya closed her eyes.

Of course there was.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

“What?””

Robert looked at the birth certificate.

“Your mother didn’t leave because she hated Marcus.””

Maya opened her eyes.

“Then why?””

Robert reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

This one was sealed.

Her name was written on the front.

But the handwriting wasn’t her mother’s.

It was Marcus’s.

Maya looked at him.

“You wrote this?””

Marcus nodded.

“I wrote it the night everything changed.””

She stared at the envelope.

“What’s inside?””

Marcus’s voice became barely audible.

“The reason I never told you the truth.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

Then Robert.

Then back at Marcus.

Slowly, she opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

May you like

And when she saw who was standing beside her mother in the picture…

her entire understanding of her family collapsed.
