Chapter 4: The Name My Mother Feared
The question landed harder than any accusation.
“What did my mother mean when she wrote that you were the one person she was afraid of?””
Maya’s voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
The microphone still stood between them, carrying every word through the auditorium.
Marcus stared at her.
For a moment, he looked less like a father standing on a graduation stage and more like a man cornered by a truth he had spent years running from.
“Maya…”
She tightened her grip around the letter.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to look away.
“I need you to answer me.””
Marcus glanced toward the audience.
Hundreds of people watched.
Phones recorded.
The university cameras captured every second.
But Maya didn’t care anymore.
She had spent her entire life protecting Marcus’s image in her heart.
Now she needed to know whether that image had ever been real.
Daniel stood beside the aisle, silent.
He didn’t interrupt.
He didn’t push.
He simply watched Marcus.
Waiting.
Marcus slowly stepped away from the microphone.
“Maya, your mother wrote that when she was angry.””
Maya’s expression changed.
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
“So she lied?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation said everything.
Maya looked down at the paper again.
“My mother was afraid of you.””
“She was afraid of losing you,” Marcus replied quickly.
“Why would she lose me because of you?””
The auditorium became painfully still.
Marcus rubbed his hand over his face.
“I loved your mother.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Maya noticed.
“You loved her?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she fear you?””
He had no answer.
Not immediately.
And that scared Maya more than anything.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Because she knew what Marcus was capable of.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“You don’t get to tell her not to know.””
Maya looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
Daniel’s face softened.
“I came back because your mother called me.””
Maya froze.
“What?””
“She found out something.””
Marcus’s expression shifted.
Daniel continued.
“She found proof that I wasn’t dead.””
A chill moved through Maya.
She looked at Marcus.
“Proof?””
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel looked at the old photograph in her hand.
“She discovered Marcus had been lying.””
The crowd reacted with shocked whispers.
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell her.””
“I said that’s not what happened.””
Maya stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Both men went silent.
She looked at Marcus.
“Did my mother know my father was alive?””
Marcus looked away.
That was the answer.
Maya felt her chest tighten.
“How long?””
Marcus whispered.
“Maya…”
“How long did she know?””
Daniel answered.
“Years.””
The word cut through her.
Years.
Maya closed her eyes.
She remembered birthdays.
School performances.
Christmas mornings.
All the moments where she asked about her father.
All the times Marcus hugged her and told her he was gone.
All the times she believed him.
She opened her eyes.
“Why?””
Marcus finally looked at her.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“From him?””
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Still saying that?””
Marcus pointed at him.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell her.””
The two men stared at each other.
Maya looked between them.
“What are you both hiding?””
Nobody answered.
Then suddenly, the auditorium doors opened.
A university staff member rushed inside holding a phone.
She whispered something to the security guard.
The guard looked toward the stage.
Then toward Marcus.
His expression changed.
“Mister Reynolds?””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
The guard walked closer.
“There’s someone outside asking to speak with Maya.””
Maya frowned.
“Who?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“He said his name is Robert Carter.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Maya noticed immediately.
“You know that name.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus looked terrified again.
But this time, it was different.
Not fear of Daniel.
Fear of someone else.
Maya stepped closer.
“Who is Robert Carter?””
Daniel looked at the exit doors.
Then back at Maya.
May you like
And quietly said:
“He’s the reason your father disappeared.””
