The House She Tried to Steal / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Brother Hidden in the Shadows

Marcus stared at the name written on the back of the photograph.

Jordan Carter.

The letters seemed impossible.

A stranger’s name.

A family name.

His family name.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Who is Jordan?””

Nobody answered immediately.

And that silence told him everything.

Another secret.

Another piece of his life that everyone else knew except him.

Marcus placed the photograph on the table.

“Don’t do this.””

His voice was low.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Give me another mystery.””

The pain in his voice made the room quiet.

“I came here tonight thinking I was defending my wife from an insult.””

He looked at Celeste.

“Now I’m finding out my mother lied about my father, my inheritance, my family, and apparently an entire person who shares my blood.””

Celeste stepped forward.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

He raised his hand.

The gesture was small.

But everyone stopped.

“For years, you decided what I was allowed to know.””

His eyes filled.

“You don’t get to decide anymore.””

Celeste looked down.

For the first time, she had no argument.

No clever explanation.

No way to control the conversation.

Evelyn opened the folder.

“Jordan was born before you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Where is he?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“That’s complicated.””

Marcus almost smiled.

“Everything about this family is complicated.””

David moved closer.

“Jordan disappeared from the family records.””

Marcus frowned.

“Disappeared?””

Celeste finally spoke.

“Because he wanted nothing to do with us.””

Evelyn turned sharply.

“That’s another lie.””

Celeste’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I was there.””

The two women stared at each other.

The tension between them felt older than the ballroom itself.

Marcus looked at David.

“Tell me.””

David sighed.

“Jordan was Adrian’s son from a previous relationship.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“So he’s my half-brother.””

“Yes.””

“Does he know about me?””

Another silence.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Of course.””

Evelyn looked away.

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Does he know?””

“Yes.””

The answer landed heavily.

“He knew about me his entire life?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But he didn’t know where you were.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because after Adrian died, Celeste made sure nobody could reach him.””

Celeste shook her head.

“That is not what happened.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You erased him.””

“I protected my son.””

“You protected your position.””

The words cut.

Marcus looked at Celeste.

“What does Jordan have to do with the house?””

Evelyn reached for another document.

“This.””

She placed it on the table.

Marcus looked down.

It was another ownership agreement.

But this one was different.

His name.

Jordan’s name.

Two signatures.

Two heirs.

Marcus looked up.

“Adrian left it to both of us.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Celeste closed her eyes.

Marcus understood.

The house was never only his.

It was never something Celeste could simply control.

Because there had always been someone else with a claim.

Jordan.

His brother.

The person she had erased.

“She needed my signature because Jordan’s rights would become active,” Marcus said.

Evelyn nodded.

“Exactly.””

Nia looked at Celeste.

“So she wasn’t trying to protect Marcus.””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was obvious.

She was trying to remove an obstacle.

Marcus looked at his mother.

“How long?””

Celeste looked confused.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know about Jordan?””

Her silence lasted too long.

“Mom.””

Celeste whispered:

“Since before you were born.””

Marcus stepped back.

The words hurt more than he expected.

“You knew my brother existed before I existed.””

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“I had reasons.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You had choices.””

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A security guard entered.

He whispered something to one of the event staff.

The staff member immediately looked toward Marcus.

“Mr. Carter?””

Marcus turned.

“Yes?””

The man swallowed.

“There’s someone outside asking for you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

The man looked at the paper in his hand.

Then answered:

“Jordan Carter.””

The room froze.

Celeste went completely pale.

Evelyn whispered:

“He came.””

Marcus stared toward the doors.

His entire life had been built around people leaving.

His father.

His aunt.

His brother.

But now someone from his past was walking toward him.

Someone who knew the truth.

May you like

The ballroom doors slowly opened.

And a man stepped inside.
