Chapter 2: The Voice Behind the Smile
The room no longer felt like a celebration.
It felt like a courtroom.
Except there was no judge.
No jury.
Only the truth sitting on a marble table between us.
The small recorder continued playing.
Celeste’s voice filled the ballroom again, smooth and confident.
The same voice that had smiled at guests all evening.
The same voice that had hugged Marcus when he walked through the door.
The same voice that had whispered cruel words when nobody else was listening.
“Once Marcus signs, Nia gets nothing.””
Marcus stared at the recorder.
Then at Celeste.
“What am I supposed to sign?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
I had learned enough about Marcus during our marriage to know that calm usually meant something inside him was breaking.
Celeste stepped forward.
“Marcus, don’t listen to this.””
Gloria raised one hand.
“Let it finish.””
Celeste looked at her.
“You recorded me?””
Gloria tilted her head slightly.
“You said those words. I simply made sure you couldn’t pretend you didn’t.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Mom?””
Gloria didn’t look away from Celeste.
“I wanted to believe I misunderstood what I heard.””
The recorder clicked.
Then Celeste’s voice returned.
“After he signs, everything will be easier.””
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Everything?””
Celeste’s face went pale.
The confidence she had walked into the ballroom with was gone.
The perfect smile.
The controlled expression.
The image she had spent decades building.
Cracking.
“I was talking about protecting the family,” Celeste said.
Gloria finally looked at her.
“No. You were talking about controlling your son.””
The words landed like a slap.
Celeste laughed nervously.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?”” Gloria asked.
The ballroom remained silent.
Even the musicians had stopped pretending to play.
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia, did you know about any of this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice almost broke.
“I swear, Marcus, I don’t know what she’s talking about.””
His eyes softened.
“I believe you.””
Those three words almost destroyed me.
Because for the last ten minutes, I had been standing there wondering if the man I loved would believe me.
And he did.
Celeste noticed.
That was when her anger returned.
“You’re choosing her?””
Marcus looked at his mother.
Then at Celeste.
Then back at me.
“I’m trying to understand why my own family is attacking my wife.””
Celeste stepped closer.
“You have no idea what she’s capable of.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Because that was the kind of accusation people made when they wanted others to fear someone.
Not because it was true.
Because it was useful.
Gloria folded her arms.
“Then explain why you needed him to sign something tonight.””
Celeste said nothing.
A dangerous silence followed.
Marcus looked at her.
“Answer the question.””
She looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the cameras from people recording the event.
At the faces of people who had admired her for years.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. I’m asking a question.””
Celeste’s eyes moved to me.
“You really think you’ve won?””
I stared at her.
“I’m not trying to win.””
Her expression hardened.
“That’s because you don’t understand what’s happening.””
Gloria stepped closer.
“Then explain it.””
Celeste looked at the recorder.
Then at Marcus.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
But instead, she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You’ll find out soon enough.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Celeste turned away.
The movement was quick.
Almost desperate.
Like someone searching for an escape.
But before she could take another step, Gloria spoke.
“Play the rest.””
Everyone looked at the recorder.
I felt my heartbeat change.
Because Gloria wasn’t nervous.
She wasn’t surprised.
She knew there was more.
The recording continued.
Celeste’s voice became clearer.
“Then the house becomes mine.””
Marcus froze.
The entire ballroom froze with him.
His eyes slowly moved toward Celeste.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just confused.
A painful kind of confusion.
“Whose house?”” he asked.
Celeste didn’t answer.
And that was the moment I realized something.
She wasn’t afraid because she had been caught.
She was afraid because Marcus had just discovered the one thing she never wanted him to question.
The room waited.
But before Celeste could speak, Gloria’s phone suddenly vibrated.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.
Gloria looked at the screen.
Then at Celeste.
“It’s someone who says they have proof.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Proof of what?””
Gloria locked her phone.
May you like
And for the first time that night, she looked uncertain.
“Proof that your mother has been lying to you for years.””
