The House She Tried to Steal / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Aunt Who Came Back

Nobody knew what to do.

The woman who had existed only as a secret was suddenly standing in front of us.

Real.

Breathing.

Present.

Evelyn Carter looked nothing like the villain Celeste had described.

She didn’t look bitter.

She didn’t look dangerous.

She looked exhausted.

Like someone who had waited years for one moment.

And finally reached it.

Marcus couldn’t move.

His eyes stayed fixed on her.

“You’re alive.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

His voice shook.

“I was told you left.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

The answer was immediate.

The entire room understood.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You already did.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Evelyn held the folder tighter.

“I came here because I knew she would try to make you sign.””

Marcus stared.

“How did you know?””

“Because she tried the same thing years ago.””

Celeste’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“You always say that.””

She looked around the ballroom.

“You said it when you told everyone I abandoned the family.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You said it when you told him the house was gone.””

Then she looked directly at Celeste.

“And you said it when you told yourself you were protecting him.””

Marcus watched his mother.

The woman who had always seemed impossible to defeat.

Now looked cornered.

“What happened with the house?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn opened the folder.

“I’ll show you.””

She placed several papers on the table.

Marcus approached slowly.

Nia stayed beside him.

Gloria watched carefully.

David looked like he had been waiting years for this moment.

Marcus picked up the first page.

His eyes moved across the text.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Evelyn answered.

“The original ownership agreement.””

Marcus looked up.

“Why is my name not on it?””

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“Because you weren’t supposed to know yet.””

He frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She pointed to the bottom.

“There.””

Marcus followed her finger.

A handwritten note.

Signed by his father.

James Carter.

Marcus read it silently.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer.

Nia looked at him.

“Marcus?””

He swallowed.

Then read the words aloud.

“‘My son will inherit everything when he learns the truth, not when he is forced into silence.’”

The room went completely still.

Celeste whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

His eyes were different now.

Not confused.

Not hurt.

Awake.

“You knew about this.””

Celeste shook her head.

“I knew he wrote something.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

She looked away.

Marcus laughed softly.

“For me to be easier to control?””

Celeste flinched.

That was the first time her silence looked like guilt.

Evelyn opened another document.

“There’s more.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What else?””

She handed him the page.

“This is why your mother needed your signature tonight.””

He read it.

His eyebrows pulled together.

Then his expression changed.

Nia noticed.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He looked at Celeste.

“What did you do?””

Celeste’s face went pale.

Marcus held the document.

“This says you transferred ownership.””

Nobody moved.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“To yourself.””

“Yes.””

Marcus stared.

“And my signature was needed to finalize it?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.””

The pieces finally connected.

The champagne.

The accusation.

The public humiliation.

The rush to make him sign.

Everything.

Celeste had tried to make Nia look like the threat.

Because she needed everyone looking away.

Marcus lowered the paper.

“Why didn’t you just ask me?””

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“Because I knew you would say no.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Marcus stared at her.

And then Evelyn spoke softly.

“There’s one more thing.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn reached into her folder.

She pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of a young man.

Marcus took it.

His hands shook.

Because the man in the picture looked exactly like him.

Evelyn whispered:

“Marcus…”

She paused.

“Adrian wasn’t the only person your mother kept from you.””

Marcus looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn stared at Celeste.

“Your father had another child.””

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

And on the back was a name.

May you like

A name that made everyone stop breathing.

*“Jordan Carter.””*
