The House She Tried to Steal / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Controlled Everything

The attorney’s question stayed in the air.

Why haven’t you signed yet?

Marcus repeated it softly.

Like he was trying to understand a language he had never heard before.

“Signed what?””

Celeste finally lost her patience.

“Enough.””

Her voice cracked through the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

For the first time, she wasn’t pretending.

She wasn’t elegant.

She wasn’t calm.

She was angry.

“Marcus, you need to leave.””

He stared at her.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

She looked around.

“This conversation is no longer appropriate.””

Marcus looked at the guests.

Then back at her.

“You embarrassed my wife in front of everyone.””

His voice dropped.

“You accused her of using me.””

He pointed toward the recorder.

“And now we find out you were hiding something about a house you told me was gone.””

He shook his head.

“And your solution is for me to leave?””

Celeste said nothing.

Because there was no answer.

Nia stood beside Gloria, watching Marcus fight a battle he never asked for.

A battle that should have belonged to the past.

But the past had found him.

And it had walked into the ballroom carrying paperwork.

David closed the folder.

“There is more.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

David nodded.

“The reason your mother wanted you to sign tonight wasn’t because of the house.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus frowned.

“Then why?””

David glanced at Celeste.

“Because she knew someone else was coming.””

Celeste’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Marcus noticed.

“Someone else?””

Gloria looked at Celeste.

“Who?””

Celeste didn’t answer.

That silence was becoming her biggest confession.

Marcus walked closer.

“Mom.””

The word sounded different now.

Not warm.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

“Who else is involved?””

Celeste looked down.

For a moment, she looked like a mother.

Not a powerful woman.

Not a wealthy family leader.

Just someone who knew the truth was finally catching up.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

He opened them.

“Protect me from what?””

Celeste whispered:

“Losing everything.””

Marcus stared.

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“You don’t understand what your father left behind.””

David interrupted.

“No. She made sure he didn’t understand.””

Celeste turned toward him.

“You have no right.””

“I have every right.””

David stepped closer.

“Your husband trusted you.””

The words made Celeste flinch.

“You promised him.””

The room became still.

Marcus looked between them.

“Promised him what?””

David didn’t answer.

Celeste did.

“Enough.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You need to trust me.””

Marcus’s expression broke slightly.

“Trust you?””

He looked at the recorder.

“At the woman who lied about my father?””

He looked at the document.

“At the woman who tried to get me to sign something without explaining it?””

Then he looked at the woman who had raised him.

“Tell me one thing.””

Celeste stared at him.

“What?””

“Did you ever plan on telling me?””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That was worse than any confession.

Nia felt the room shift.

Because everyone understood.

She had no plan.

No explanation.

No moment where she was going to sit Marcus down and tell him.

She was only going to tell him if she was forced to.

Gloria reached into her pocket and pulled out a second item.

A small envelope.

Marcus noticed.

“What’s that?””

Gloria looked at Celeste.

“This arrived at my house three days ago.””

Celeste’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Gloria looked at her.

“Someone mailed it.””

Marcus reached for it.

Gloria handed it to him.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A young man standing beside a house.

Marcus looked at it.

Then his breathing stopped.

Because he recognized the house.

Not from memory.

From childhood pictures.

The same house his father always talked about.

The same house Celeste claimed no longer belonged to them.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

Marcus read it aloud.

“Your mother didn’t lose this house.””

He looked up.

His voice was barely audible.

“She took it.””

Celeste stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then prove it.””

Nobody moved.

Celeste’s eyes dropped to the photograph.

And then Marcus noticed something.

A small detail.

Something written beneath the message.

A name.

A name he had never heard before.

A name that made David go completely silent.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is this?””

David didn’t answer.

Marcus held up the photograph.

“Who is Evelyn Carter?””
