Chapter 13: The Truth About Adrian’s Death

The message remained on Jordan’s phone.

One sentence.

One devastating possibility.

*“If Marcus knows the truth, he needs to know why Adrian really died.””*

Nobody moved.

The ballroom, which had already witnessed humiliation, betrayal, and decades of secrets, suddenly felt like it was holding its breath.

Marcus looked at Jordan.

“What does that mean?””

Jordan didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened him more than anything else.

Marcus had spent the entire night discovering hidden truths, but this felt different.

The others had been about documents.

Property.

Family history.

This was about a person.

His father.

The man who had raised him.

The man whose memory Marcus had protected his entire life.

“Jordan.””

His brother looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stared.

“You don’t know?””

Jordan shook his head.

“I knew Adrian’s death was complicated. I didn’t know everything.””

Celeste suddenly spoke.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not controlling.

Afraid.

“Please.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Please what?””

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“Don’t open this door.””

The words were almost a confession.

Marcus stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I spent my whole life walking through doors you locked.””

Celeste looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

He looked at the recorder sitting on the table.

“But every secret you protected became something that hurt me later.””

Nobody could argue.

Because nobody could deny it.

Evelyn moved closer.

“There is something you need to understand.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.””

The words hit the room like thunder.

Nia felt Marcus’s hand tighten.

For a second, she thought he might collapse.

But he stayed standing.

“Then how?””

Evelyn looked at David.

David lowered his eyes.

“You know something.””

It wasn’t a question.

David sighed.

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Of course you do.””

David stepped forward.

“I was there that night.””

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus opened his eyes.

“You were there?””

David nodded.

“I was with Adrian hours before he died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

David looked ashamed.

“Because Celeste made me promise.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Another promise.””

David accepted the pain in his voice.

“I thought I was protecting your family.””

Marcus looked around.

“My family?””

He shook his head.

“You all keep saying that word like it means hiding things from me.””

David reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””

Marcus stared.

“What is it?””

David handed it to him.

“Something Adrian left behind.””

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a small key.

Nothing else.

He looked confused.

“A key?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father knew someone might try to destroy the evidence.””

Marcus looked at the key.

“Evidence of what?””

David answered quietly.

“The night he died.””

The room became still.

Marcus looked at Celeste.

Her face had gone pale.

“You knew about this.””

She didn’t respond.

Marcus looked at her.

“Didn’t you?””

Celeste whispered:

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Marcus’s voice became softer.

“How long?””

Celeste closed her eyes.

“Since that night.””

The pain on Marcus’s face was worse than anger.

Because anger meant there was still a fight.

This was grief.

“You let me believe he died peacefully.””

Celeste cried silently.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You had years.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at him.

“That you would hate me.””

Marcus looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Jordan stepped forward.

“Where does the key go?””

David looked at him.

“To Adrian’s private office.””

Marcus frowned.

“I thought that was destroyed.””

Celeste looked away.

Jordan noticed.

“So did I.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Where is it?””

David hesitated.

Then answered:

“Still inside the house.””

The same house.

The one everyone had fought over.

The one that started everything.

Marcus looked at the documents.

The recorder.

The key.

Everything connected.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Older.

Shaking.

“Marcus?””

His expression changed.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Clara.””

Marcus frowned.

“I don’t know a Clara.””

The woman breathed heavily.

“You don’t know me.””

Another pause.

“But I knew your father.””

Marcus looked at Jordan.

At Evelyn.

At Gloria.

“Why are you calling me?””

The woman’s voice dropped.

“Because I was there the night Adrian died.””

Marcus froze.

The entire ballroom watched him.

Then she said the words nobody expected.

“And your mother wasn’t alone.””
