Chapter 3: The Secret Everyone Protected
The ballroom had become a place of whispers.
Not loud ones.
Not dramatic ones.
The quiet kind.
The kind that spreads faster because people are afraid to admit they’re interested.
I stood beside Gloria, still wearing the black dress that was now stained with champagne.
Marcus stood in front of us.
His entire world had changed in less than fifteen minutes.
His mother.
His wife.
A hidden recording.
A house.
A secret.
Too many pieces that didn’t fit.
“Mom,” Marcus said, looking at Gloria, “who sent that message?””
Gloria looked at her phone again.
“I don’t know if this person is telling the truth.””
Marcus frowned.
“But you know who it is?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words could.
“Mom.””
Gloria sighed.
“Someone from your family’s past.””
Celeste immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
The panic in her voice was impossible to hide.
“No one from the past needs to be dragged into this.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why?””
Celeste swallowed.
“Because they don’t know the full story.””
Gloria looked at her.
“Neither does Marcus.””
That sentence changed everything.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Then tell me.””
Celeste shook her head.
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because you’re emotional.””
Marcus laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“You threw champagne at my wife in front of everyone and now I’m the emotional one?””
Nobody spoke.
Celeste looked away.
For years, she had controlled every room she entered.
Tonight was different.
Tonight, she was losing control.
Gloria picked up the recorder.
“Marcus, I need you to understand something.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“Your mother knew you would eventually be asked to sign something.””
Marcus stared.
“Asked by who?””
Gloria didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because Gloria was not a woman who struggled to find words.
She chose them carefully.
“I hoped I was wrong.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“This makes no sense.””
I reached for his hand.
He held mine.
The small gesture meant everything.
Because even surrounded by secrets, he was still choosing me.
Celeste noticed.
And her expression changed.
“You don’t know what she’s done.””
I looked at her.
“What have I done?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Marcus.
“She changed you.””
Marcus frowned.
“She made me better.””
The words were simple.
But they cut through the room.
Celeste’s face tightened.
“I sacrificed everything for this family.””
Gloria stepped forward.
“And you think that gives you the right to take everything from others.””
Celeste’s eyes flashed.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Gloria said.
“You’re right. I don’t understand how a mother can look at her own son and see a signature instead of a person.””
The room went silent again.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A man in his sixties entered slowly.
Black suit.
Gray beard.
A folder in his hand.
He looked around the room until his eyes found Marcus.
Then Gloria.
Then Celeste.
Celeste whispered his name.
And for the first time all night, she looked truly afraid.
“David.””
The man stopped.
“I told you I would come if you tried to do this again.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who are you?””
David walked closer.
He placed the folder on the table beside the recorder.
“I’m the person who should have told you the truth a long time ago.””
Celeste’s voice shook.
“Don’t.””
David ignored her.
He looked directly at Marcus.
“Your mother has spent years making sure you never found out what happened to that house.””
Marcus stared at the folder.
“What happened to it?””
David slowly opened it.
Inside was a single document.
Marcus reached for it.
But before his fingers touched the page, Gloria grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her eyes moved from the document to Celeste.
Because she had seen something.
Something that made her realize this was bigger than money.
Bigger than a house.
Bigger than a family argument.
Gloria whispered:
“Marcus… before you read that, you need to know who signed the original agreement.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Gloria turned the document around.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
A name that made Marcus’s face go completely still.
Because it was not Celeste’s name.
It was not Gloria’s.
It was not mine.
It was his.
May you like
And underneath it was the date.
The date before Marcus was even born.
