The House She Tried to Steal / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Signature Before My Birth

The room went silent when Marcus saw his own name.

Not a similar name.

Not a family member with the same last name.

His name.

Printed in black ink at the bottom of the document.

The same name he had written thousands of times in his life.

But this signature was impossible.

Because the date above it was thirty-seven years earlier.

Before Marcus existed.

Before he had taken his first breath.

Before he had ever held a pen.

He stared at the paper like it was a message from a stranger.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

The silence became heavier.

Marcus looked at Gloria.

His mother-in-law stood beside Nia, her expression controlled but her eyes full of something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for him.

“Mom,” Marcus said slowly, “why is my name on this?””

Celeste stepped forward.

“That document means nothing.””

David looked at her.

“Then why did you spend years hiding it?””

Her face tightened.

“I didn’t hide anything.””

David gave a bitter laugh.

“You destroyed every copy you could find.””

Several guests gasped.

Marcus looked between them.

“Can someone please explain what is happening?””

Celeste raised her chin.

“I was protecting you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

His voice became colder.

“But nobody tells me what you’re protecting me from.””

The ballroom lights reflected off the glass walls around us. Outside, the city glittered like nothing had happened.

But inside that room, a family was falling apart.

David opened the folder again.

“There are things your mother never wanted you to know.””

Celeste’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.””

David looked at her.

“I’ve been careful for thirty years.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“What is it?””

David pulled out another page.

“A legal agreement.””

Marcus frowned.

“Between who?””

David hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Between your biological father and Celeste.””

The words hit harder than the champagne ever could.

Marcus froze.

“My father?””

Gloria looked down.

Nia felt my hand tighten around hers.

I had known Marcus for six years.

I knew how much he loved his father.

How he kept old photographs in his office.

How he talked about the man who taught him how to ride a bike.

How he said losing him was the hardest moment of his life.

But now someone had placed a secret between that memory and reality.

Celeste shook her head.

“This is unnecessary.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Keep going.””

Celeste’s face changed.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“For once, tell me the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

David looked at the document.

“Your father owned the house.””

Marcus frowned.

“The house?””

The question hung in the air.

The same question he had asked before.

The same question Celeste refused to answer.

David nodded.

“Yes.””

“What house?””

David looked at Celeste.

“The family estate.””

Marcus stared.

“The one you told me was sold?””

Celeste said nothing.

That was the answer.

Marcus slowly backed away.

“You told me that house was gone.””

“I had a reason.””

“What reason?””

Celeste looked around.

At the guests.

At the people watching her.

Then at Marcus.

“You were young.””

“I was twenty-eight.””

“You were still my son.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“So that means you could lie to me?””

Celeste’s expression hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

Gloria stepped forward.

“And tonight, she was going to do it again.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Gloria picked up the recorder.

“The document she wanted you to sign was connected to that house.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What document?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the one secret still trapped inside the room.

The one piece Celeste had not allowed anyone to reveal.

Nia watched Celeste carefully.

The woman who had humiliated me.

The woman who had tried to make me look greedy.

The woman who had accused me of wanting money.

Now stood there protecting something of her own.

And I finally understood.

The champagne was never about me.

It was a distraction.

A performance.

She needed everyone looking at me.

Because she was terrified they would look at her.

Marcus turned toward Celeste.

“What were you going to make me sign?””

Celeste opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, David’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.

David didn’t respond.

He answered.

“Hello?””

The entire ballroom watched him listen.

Then his eyes moved toward Marcus.

“No.””

A pause.

Then another.

“I understand.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

David slowly lowered the phone.

“That was the attorney.””

Celeste looked away.

Marcus noticed.

“What attorney?””

David looked directly at him.

“The attorney who prepared the document you were supposed to sign tonight.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“Why would he call now?””

May you like

David looked at Celeste.

“Because he wants to know why you haven’t signed yet.””
