The Key My Wife Left Behind / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Truth Angela Buried

The person standing at the bottom of the stairs was not a stranger.

That was what made it worse.

I knew him.

Everyone in that room knew him.

He had smiled at family dinners.

He had held baby Eli.

He had sat beside me after Angela’s funeral.

And now he was standing beneath my house.

Daniel.

My brother.

The phone in my hand still showed our disconnected call.

I stared at him.

“Daniel?””

He looked up.

His expression was exhausted.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just tired.

“Marcus.””

I couldn’t move.

“You were here?””

He looked at the hidden room.

“I’ve been trying to protect what Angela left behind.””

My laugh was empty.

“Protect?””

I walked down one step.

“You were spying on us?””

“No.””

“You knew about the safe.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the room.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Angela’s death wasn’t an accident.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me why I buried my wife believing she died randomly.””

Daniel looked at Eli.

Then at me.

“Because Angela asked me not to tell you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps using her name like it excuses everything.””

“It doesn’t.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked toward the hidden room.

“Because Angela knew the truth would destroy you.””

I stared at him.

“My wife trusted me.””

“She loved you.””

“Then why?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because she discovered someone was manipulating your entire life.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

“She found financial records. Identity changes. Legal documents.””

The papers.

The safe.

Everything connected.

Daniel continued.

“Someone was preparing to take control of everything you owned.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Vanessa?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

He looked directly at me.

“The person who convinced Vanessa to help.””

The room became still.

I looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“I didn’t know what I was part of.””

Daniel nodded.

“I believe you.””

I almost laughed.

“You believe her?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Angela believed she could be saved.””

That sentence hit me.

Vanessa looked down.

Tears rolled down her face.

“I made a terrible choice.””

I turned toward her.

“What choice?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“She signed something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“A document that gave someone access.””

“To what?””

Daniel looked at Eli.

“Your family.””

I hated how every answer created more questions.

I walked deeper into the hidden room.

It was small.

Old.

But organized.

Angela’s handwriting covered boxes and folders.

She had built this place like she knew she would need it.

Like she knew she might disappear.

I opened a box.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And a small video camera.

I picked it up.

“Angela recorded everything?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew someone would come looking.””

I pressed the power button.

The screen flickered.

Angela appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My chest tightened.

“Marcus,” she said.

I couldn’t breathe.

“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””

Eli moved closer.

“Mom…”

Angela looked into the camera.

“I need you to understand something.””

She paused.

“Not everyone who hurt us wanted to hurt us.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Angela continued.

“Some people were scared.””

A tear moved down my face.

Because even after death, Angela was still trying to protect everyone.

Then she said:

“But there is one person I could not reach.””

The video glitched.

The image distorted.

Angela’s voice became quieter.

“Marcus, the person responsible is someone you trust completely.””

The screen went black.

Everyone stared.

Then the video restarted.

But this time, there was a different message.

Not Angela.

A man’s voice.

A voice I had never heard.

“You should have stayed away from the safe.””

Daniel immediately moved.

“Turn it off.””

Too late.

The voice continued.

“Now I know exactly who found it.””

The camera screen showed something impossible.

A live feed.

From inside the hidden room.

The person watching us was not somewhere outside.

He was watching through the camera.

Then the voice said:

“Marcus, look behind you.””

I turned.

Slowly.

Nobody was there.

Then the hidden room door began closing.

May you like

From the outside.

Someone had locked us inside.
