Chapter 14: The Truth Beneath the Lies
For six years, I believed I knew my wife.
Angela was the woman who laughed too loudly at bad jokes.
The woman who sang while cooking dinner.
The woman who stayed awake when I came home late from training because she wanted to hear about my day.
She was my safe place.
But now I was standing in a hidden room beneath our house, surrounded by people who knew a version of her I never saw.
A version that kept secrets.
A version that prepared for war.
“Who was Angela before me?”” I asked.
Maya looked at the floor.
“I promised her I would never tell you unless she couldn’t.””
“She can’t.””
My voice cracked.
“She’s gone.””
Maya nodded.
“I know.””
She took the camera.
“Angela wasn’t running from a person.””
She looked at me.
“She was running from an organization.””
The word sounded impossible.
“What kind?””
“An illegal financial network.””
Thomas spoke quietly.
“They used military families.””
I turned.
“Military families?””
“Yes.””
Daniel continued.
“They targeted people with access, trust, and influence.””
My stomach tightened.
“And Angela found them.””
Maya nodded.
“She didn’t just find them.””
She looked at the documents.
“She exposed them.””
I picked up the papers.
The ones I almost signed.
“What are these?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I can answer.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“When Marcus was deployed, someone approached me.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who?””
“I never saw his face.””
“Then how did you trust him?””
“I didn’t.””
She looked at Eli.
“He threatened him.””
The room went silent.
My anger shifted.
Not disappeared.
Shifted.
“What did he say?””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“He said if I didn’t cooperate, Eli would disappear.””
I looked at my son.
He moved closer.
“I thought I could control it.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I thought I could protect him by doing what they wanted.””
“And the documents?””
She nodded.
“They were meant to transfer control of everything.””
My fists tightened.
“My house.””
“Yes.””
“My accounts.””
“Yes.””
“My son.””
Her silence was enough.
I turned away.
Six years.
Six years of trusting people.
Six years of believing I was protecting my family.
And someone had been moving pieces around me the entire time.
Then Maya spoke.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Angela knew who was behind it.””
The room froze.
“Who?””
Maya looked at Daniel.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared.
“Why are you apologizing?””
He didn’t answer.
Maya did.
“Because Angela didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My heart sank.
“What way?””
She pointed at the documents.
“Those papers weren’t just about your property.””
I looked down.
“They were evidence.””
“Of what?””
Maya’s voice dropped.
“Of who was controlling everything.””
I opened the folder.
For the first time, I looked past the signatures.
Past the legal language.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Connections.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
A name that made my entire body go cold.
My father.
I stared at the page.
No.
It couldn’t be.
My father had been dead for twelve years.
“What is this?””
Maya stepped closer.
“Your father wasn’t involved.””
I looked at her.
“Then why is his name here?””
“Because someone used his identity.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Maya hesitated.
Then she said:
“The person who killed Angela was someone who inherited your father’s secrets.””
I looked at the list again.
A signature at the bottom.
A signature I recognized.
Not because I had seen it recently.
Because I had seen it my entire life.
My father’s handwriting.
Impossible.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
No number.
No name.
Only one sentence.
YOU’RE FINALLY READY TO KNOW WHO YOUR FAMILY REALLY IS.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Then the message continued.
THE PERSON WHO ANSWERED ALL YOUR QUESTIONS HAS BEEN STANDING BESIDE YOU THE WHOLE TIME.
Slowly…
May you like
everyone looked at one person.
Eli.
