Chapter 5: The Name Angela Left Behind
The video ended.
No explanation.
No second chance to understand.
Just a black screen and the sound of my own breathing.
Eli stared at the phone.
“That was Mom.””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I was stuck on one sentence.
The person who helped me hide them is someone you trust.
Someone inside my house.
I slowly turned toward Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
But not surprised.
That was the detail I couldn’t ignore.
She knew this was coming.
“You saw that video before,” I said.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“I swear.””
“Then why do you look like you already know what she was going to say?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stood.
“Who helped Angela?””
She shook her head.
“I can’t tell you.””
My anger rose.
“You can’t?””
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
The words stopped me.
Not because they made sense.
Because they sounded honest.
For the first time.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Marcus, Angela found something before she died.””
“What?””
“She found out people were using your name.””
“My name?””
She nodded.
“Your military identity. Your accounts. Your reputation.””
I felt a chill.
“What people?””
She looked toward the windows.
Like she was afraid someone could hear us.
“I don’t know everything.””
“You know enough.””
She sat down.
For the first time since I returned, Vanessa looked smaller.
Not powerful.
Not controlling.
Just scared.
“I made mistakes,” she whispered.
I remained standing.
“What kind of mistakes?””
She looked at Eli.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
Her eyes moved to the documents.
“The situation.””
I grabbed the papers.
“You still haven’t told me what these are.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you before you understand everything, you’ll make the same mistake Angela was trying to stop.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying Angela.””
Her voice cracked.
“Because she was right.””
The room became silent.
A person who had every reason to defend herself had just admitted my dead wife was right.
That frightened me more than a lie.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, no text.
Only a location marker.
Inside the house.
I looked at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She stepped closer.
“What?””
I showed her.
Her face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“What is?””
She pointed.
“The office.””
My eyes moved to the screen.
The location was coming from inside my home office.
I walked back.
Slowly.
The safe was still open.
The documents were still there.
The photograph was still on the desk.
But something was different.
The back panel of the safe.
There was a small crack.
I touched it.
It moved.
A hidden compartment.
Vanessa stopped behind me.
“Marcus…”
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
But this time, I believed her.
Because she looked just as shocked as I was.
I pulled the panel open.
Inside was a small envelope.
Old.
Sealed.
My name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
By Angela.
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
Eli moved closer.
“Dad…”
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, I failed to protect you myself.
But someone else helped me.
Trust him.
Not her.
My eyes stopped.
A name was written underneath.
The person who helped Angela.
The person she trusted.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
I looked up.
She saw my face.
“Marcus?””
I slowly turned the paper toward her.
The color disappeared from her face.
Because she recognized the name.
And I realized something worse.
May you like
She wasn’t afraid of the person.
She was afraid I would find out what they had done.
