Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Never Gone
I forgot how to breathe.
The person standing outside the hidden room wasn’t a stranger.
Wasn’t an enemy.
Wasn’t someone from Angela’s past.
It was someone I had mourned.
Someone I had believed was gone forever.
A woman stood in the doorway, older than the last time I saw her, tears filling her eyes.
Angela’s sister.
Maya.
For six years, everyone told me Maya disappeared after the funeral because she couldn’t handle losing Angela.
They said grief made her leave.
They said she needed a new life.
I believed it.
Because I had already lost too much to question anything else.
But she was standing in my house.
In the hidden room.
Holding the truth my wife died trying to protect.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
My body reacted before my mind.
I stepped forward.
“What are you doing here?””
Maya looked down.
“I know what this looks like.””
“You’re alive.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe you were gone?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
I almost laughed.
Nobody in that room seemed to have a choice.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
But somehow, I was always the person left in the dark.
“You all knew.””
Maya looked at the others.
Daniel lowered his head.
Thomas looked away.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
The silence answered.
“You all knew she wasn’t gone.””
Maya stepped closer.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She took a breath.
“Angela wanted me hidden.””
“Why?””
“Because I was the first person she trusted after she found out.””
“Found out what?””
Maya looked at Eli.
Then at the letter in my hand.
“The truth about her death.””
The room became silent.
I felt my hands tighten.
“Say it.””
Maya looked at me.
“Angela was murdered.””
Even though I had heard the words before.
Even though I already suspected.
Hearing them directly felt like the ground moved beneath me.
Eli grabbed my arm.
“Dad…”
I looked down at him.
Then back at Maya.
“Who?””
Maya’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Maya continued.
“Not Vanessa.””
The relief on Vanessa’s face lasted only a second.
“Then who?””
Maya looked at the old camera sitting on the table.
“Angela recorded the answer.””
She walked inside.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like entering a place full of ghosts.
“She knew someone would try to erase everything.””
Maya touched the wall.
“She built this room because she knew she couldn’t trust the people around her.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Except you.””
She nodded.
“Except me.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her expression broke.
“Because Angela made me promise.””
I looked at her.
“Another promise.””
Her tears fell.
“She wasn’t trying to hurt you, Marcus.””
“Everyone says that.””
“She was trying to keep Eli alive.””
The mention of my son changed everything.
I looked at him.
He was holding the letter from Angela.
The only thing in this entire nightmare that was meant only for him.
Maya sat down.
“Six years ago, Angela discovered that someone was using your deployment schedule.””
My face tightened.
“What?””
“Someone knew when you would be away. Someone knew your financial information. Someone knew exactly how to make you vulnerable.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“I found some of it.””
Daniel added:
“I helped Angela trace the rest.””
I looked at both of them.
“And you never told me.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Because we thought telling you would put a target on your back.””
I stared at him.
“And hiding it didn’t?””
Nobody answered.
Maya continued.
“Angela found the person behind it.””
“Who?””
She looked at the camera.
“Someone who was part of your family.””
My stomach turned.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the camera turned on by itself.
Everyone froze.
The screen flickered.
Then Angela appeared.
This time, she looked different.
Not scared.
Determined.
“Marcus.””
I moved closer.
Her voice filled the room.
“If you’re watching this, then you know enough to ask the right question.””
I swallowed.
Angela continued.
“The person who betrayed us wasn’t Vanessa.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“It wasn’t Thomas.””
Thomas looked down.
“It wasn’t Daniel.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Angela paused.
“It was someone I trusted before I met Marcus.””
The video distorted.
Then Angela said one final sentence.
“Marcus, the person responsible is the reason I never told you about my past.””
The screen went black.
Everyone stared.
My heart was pounding.
Because Angela’s past was something I never questioned.
I thought I knew everything about her.
I was wrong.
Maya whispered:
“You never knew who Angela really was before she became your wife.””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Maya looked at the door.
Then at the documents.
Then at Eli.
“It means the person who killed Angela didn’t come after her.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“They came after you.””
