The Key My Wife Left Behind / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

I held the letter between my fingers.

The handwriting was Angela’s.

The warning was Angela’s.

But the name at the bottom belonged to someone I never expected.

Someone who had hugged me after Angela’s funeral.

Someone who stood beside me when I thought my entire world had collapsed.

My brother.

Daniel.

My own brother had helped Angela hide something from me.

I stared at the paper.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You know him.””

I looked up.

“You knew Daniel was involved?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then why did you say it like that?””

“Because I knew Angela trusted him.””

I walked away from both of them.

The office suddenly felt too small.

The walls felt closer.

Every memory I had of my family started changing.

Daniel carrying Eli on his shoulders.

Daniel helping me repair the house.

Daniel telling me after Angela died, “I’ll protect you and your son.””

Was that real?

Or was it all part of something bigger?

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Daniel.

My heart stopped.

Vanessa saw the name.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because he knows.””

“Knows what?””

She swallowed.

“Knows you found it.””

The phone continued ringing.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then my brother’s voice.

“Marcus.””

I closed my eyes.

“Daniel.””

“You’re home.””

Not a question.

A statement.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You know I’m home?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Did you open the safe?””

My grip tightened.

“How do you know about the safe?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me more than words.

“Marcus,” he finally said, “listen to me carefully.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You listen.””

I looked at Eli.

At Vanessa.

At the photograph of Angela.

“You knew.””

Daniel sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

“Find out what?””

“That Angela was right.””

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

“Right about what?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“About Vanessa.””

I looked at her.

She looked away.

“You’re lying,” I said.

“I’m not.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Angela made me promise.””

I froze.

“She made you promise?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because she knew you would blame yourself.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t talk like you know what I feel.””

“I know exactly what you feel.””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was there when you stopped eating after she died. I was there when you sat in that house every night holding Eli because you were afraid to sleep.””

I said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“Angela didn’t want you destroyed again.””

“Then why hide everything?””

“Because she found out someone close to you was dangerous.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then back to the phone.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course you can’t.””

“Marcus, you need to leave the house.””

My body went still.

“What?””

“Take Eli and leave.””

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows you opened that safe, you’re already out of time.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She heard enough.

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

The front door suddenly slammed downstairs.

All of us froze.

Eli grabbed my hand.

“Dad?””

I looked toward the hallway.

Someone was inside.

Someone who had entered without knocking.

Without warning.

Without permission.

Then a man’s voice echoed through the house.

“Marcus?””

I knew that voice.

Daniel.

But he was on the phone.

The call was still connected.

My blood turned cold.

The voice downstairs called again.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel’s voice whispered through the speaker:

“Don’t move.””

The footsteps got closer.

And then the person standing outside the office door said:

“Open the door.””

I stared at Vanessa.

She stared back.

Because both of us understood the same terrifying truth.

May you like

The man downstairs wasn’t here to explain.

He was here because he knew we found the secret.
