The Key My Wife Left Behind / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: Angela’s Last Warning

I stared at the photograph until the ink blurred.

Angela’s handwriting was impossible to mistake.

I had watched her write grocery lists, birthday cards, notes for Eli’s lunchbox.

The curves of her letters.

The way she crossed her T’s.

The way she pressed harder when she wanted something remembered.

This was her.

This was real.

“Marcus…”

Vanessa’s voice sounded distant.

I didn’t answer.

Eli stepped closer.

“Dad?””

I looked down.

My son was staring at the photograph.

“Is that Mom?””

I nodded.

“Yeah.””

He touched the edge carefully.

“She wrote something?””

I swallowed.

“Yeah.””

“What does it say?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked away.

That was when I knew.

Whatever Angela discovered before she died, Vanessa knew about it.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Eli,” I said softly, “go sit on the couch for a minute.””

“But Dad—”

“Please.””

He nodded.

He didn’t argue.

That scared me more.

A child who stops arguing is usually a child who has learned nobody listens.

When he left, I closed the office door.

Vanessa stood across from me.

The sunlight coming through the window made the room bright.

Too bright for a conversation this dark.

“Start talking.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked at the photograph.

“I never wanted you to find that.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I was trying to protect us.””

I laughed quietly.

“Protect us?””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“My son was sleeping in the garage.””

Her expression changed.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

“Supposed to happen?””

“Yes.””

The word came out too quickly.

She realized her mistake immediately.

I stepped closer.

“Explain that sentence.””

She rubbed her forehead.

“I was under pressure.””

“From who?””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“You think I wanted this?””

“I think my son was scared of you.””

Her face tightened.

“I never hurt him.””

“You locked him away.””

“I was disciplining him.””

“He’s eight years old.””

“He needed boundaries.””

I stared at her.

The woman standing in front of me sounded like someone I didn’t know.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“You don’t know what Angela left behind.””

My entire body went still.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa froze.

“I…”

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You said Angela.””

She looked trapped.

“Marcus, I shouldn’t have said that.””

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“I knew she was hiding something.””

The room became silent.

“What did she hide?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I picked up the legal documents from the safe.

“These?””

Her eyes moved toward the papers.

“Yes.””

“What are they?””

She looked away.

“Marcus…”

“What are they?””

Her voice dropped.

“If you sign them, everything changes.””

The sentence hung between us.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What changes?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked toward the documents.

“I’m reading them.””

“No.””

The panic in her voice was immediate.

Not controlled.

Not hidden.

Real.

I stopped.

“Why?””

She stepped forward.

“Because you don’t know what you’re opening.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Angela’s final warning.

IF HE FINDS THIS, VANESSA HAS ALREADY BETRAYED HIM.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

My hands went cold.

The text contained only one sentence.

MARCUS, DON’T TRUST THE WOMAN STANDING NEXT TO YOU.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Vanessa was staring at my phone.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“Who sent that?”” she whispered.

I looked at the message again.

Then at her.

And before I could speak, another message appeared.

This time with a name attached.

May you like

A name I hadn’t seen in years.

Angela.
